I have a well-worn copy of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark that I've had since pre-school, and I started reading Goosebumps religiously when I was 7.

But if we're talking *adult* horror, I'm pretty sure it was Stephen King's FOUR PAST MIDNIGHT. I was....9, maybe?

I've returned to it a few times and found it enjoyable. My favorite story in it has changed over the years. I think overall the strongest story in it is probably The Langoliers but The Library Policeman is the one that's stuck with me the hardest.

It was an abridged and illustrated version of Poe's short stories. The complexity of the language was dialled down for a 9-11 yo audience, but not the horror. Respect.

After that, it would have been IT.

For my brother too - got mixed up at school, but now reads a lot, loves Stephen King etc. I don't think he would have without Goosebumps.

Feel the same way about Goosebumps. Got to meet RL Stine a year or two ago and that’s basically what I told him. “Thank you for helping kids like me get interested in reading.” Reading opens so many doors and anyone you can instill that love early on in so many is a hero in my book.
