She was smart gritty and revolutionary. SHE did nothing wrong (she died) It was Mitch M who abused the system and his power. Put the blame where it belongs 🤬. U folks have a VERY short memory..🤦🏻♀️
I agree that Mitch and his party abused the system and are heinous evildoers in general. By the time Scalia died (2/16) it was already too late. No liberal justice should count on a the democratic party winning the white house 3 terms in a row. I’ve yet to live through that and I’m getting old.
Ya’ll are the problem. This whole woman’s legacy thrown bc she didn’t retire though being as mentally fit as people 4 decades younger? She couldn’t foresee her death…. This is not the way.
She had stage 4 pancreatic cancer which has like a 4% survivability rate and she was already in her 80s the Grim Reaper was literally tucking her into bed every night
But she just couldn’t stomach being replaced by a Black Man so she held out for Hillary, and now our democracy is gone
Then she should retire when she could leave the court in a better place but no she had to hold on to power until it was pried from her cold dead fingers. Boomers and their unwillingness to give up power and shit politics
Yep, people really don't like it, I've made more than one person spicy by saying that you can lay this mess at the feet of HRC and RGB (and others of course) but hubris is always the fatal error.
HRC won the popular vote. Blame the Electoral College. RGB took that lifetime appointment thing personally rather than politically. Joe Biden bought his own hype about being the only one who could beat Trump. There’s a misguided old guard.
She bullied her way to the nomination and didn't campaign in the midwest after calling them deplorable. She also enables her husband who is a known sex pest.
RBG should have stepped down. The current makeup of the SCOTUS is absolutely partially on her shoulders. She insisted on staying even though she was dying - her ego got in the way of making the right decision.
I agree she should have stepped down..but we need to more than bitch abt it on bluesky too! Email, call, protest! Do whatever u can to show your resistance to this un-American bullshit!
Yes. But we need to remember, although she could have helped us avoid this, Mitch McConnell shoulders most of the blame. He and the Democrats that did not fight him when he prevented the nomination process to take place.
There is nothing "embarrassing" about any RBG mural, nor was her term on the Court any sort of "failure" solely because she didn't resign prior to 2016. Unfortunately we sometimes get stuck with raging-asshole justices: Clarence Thomas, after all, replaced Thurgood Marshall on the bench.
I'm sorry she inconveniently died while on the bench & that Mitch McConnell was evil enough to force a *second* Trump SCOTUS justice forward, but none of the Court's odious 6-3 rulings would've been affected by it either way – and btw ALL of today's awful rulings came in at 6-3.
Right, except Biden had actual principles & honor. I'm not "blaming" him for taking actions that a more reasonable SCOTUS would view as an extremist view on executive power.
That said, Biden's colossal fuckup IMO was clearly his failure to bow out of any reelection talk early on.
Or lying as the first thing he did…
“400$ of it came from Trump already…“,
“I’m a transition president, one term…”,
or the rail worker strike,
or funding and arming a genocide….
It'd almost be funny bringing up Biden's "principles and honor" if that gigantic piece of shit hasn't built his career sheparding one awful conservative policy after another through the Senate, including Clarence Thomas.
Justices don’t just vote on cases. They discuss and debate them. 1 less liberal on the court is 1 less voice who could potentially sway other justices to vote our way. And saying she failed us by not resigning at the appropriate time isn’t saying she failed as a justice. They’re two different things
I love all the "how was she supposed to know she'd die?" like she was some 40 year old who got killed by a drunk driver or something. How many *decades* are we going to have to put up with Trump's non-geriatric justices?!
Yes Ruth Ginsburg should have retired when Obama asked her to. Just like Biden should have not run in 2024. There should have been an open primary. I am a life long dem but old is old and everyone must admit when it's time to go.
There was an open primary for 2024, there was at least 3 challengers, it Biden and the DNC leadership that refused to participate in the democratic process while claiming trump was the anti democracy candidate
They tried to have open primary at the beginning of 2023. That's what I'm trying to tell you.
Dean Phillips ran, Marianne Williamson ran, and Cenk Uygar, a naturalised citizen tried to run.
The DNC leadership refused to participate and gave orders to State Democrat parties to cancel votes.
So instead of fighting republicans who are literally taking is over from the inside you’re STILL attacking Dems or people that actually did good?! FFS get it together. This so stupid.
Republican politicians are soulless ghouls that do whatever their donors pay them to do, and Republican voters are mindless drones that believe whatever their favorite propaganda outlet tells them to. They cannot be shamed into doing the right thing.
Meanwhile, Democratic leadership is punishing anyone that tries to oppose the Republicans, they refuse to learn a single lesson from all their losses, they keep voting for Trump's bills and nominees, and they won't pull their heads out of their ass long enough to figure out why everyone hates them.
I’ve been railing about RBG since the days of Obama. A young liberal could have been placed but noooo; one thinks they are singularly important to history. It’s like Connelly being voted over AOC and then dying a few months later. Dems will never learn. And we will suffer the consequences.
The last 2 years of Obama's presidency the Republicans had 54 seats in the Senate. McConnell was the Majority Leader. It's doubtful a young liberal would have been confirmed if RBG had retired during that time.
It’s the over arching strategy that’s disappointing. RBG had cancer issues since 1999. Forethought was required. When Obama had all three houses early on; why not realize nothing last forever and make plans while one could. 8 members since 2022 all with health issues have died; all Dems.
RGB isn't a "Dem". She was a liberal justice but it's not a party affiliated job. And it's a lifetime appointment. Obama could have asked but couldn't make her retire.
One problem with this discussion is you folks love to dish out the vitriol but dont know how anything works.
I have to agree. I loved RBG, and it's unlikely a Republican Senate would have approved any of Obama's pics at any time. A good argument for term limits for the Supreme Court.
Term limits have nothing to do with age. RBGs decision and anyone else's should have been guided by strategy, not personal gratification or any other excuse. trump's rise was not a surprise to anyone with the ability to read.
Not at all, nor is it necessary to respond rudely like you Flores over from X.
If one is 74 with throat cancer why would you continue as a congressman? This is not about age but understanding one’s own human limits. Too much is at stake.
Every day we blame women more and more for not stepping aside when the problem was McConnell and the people that couldn't hold their nose and vote for Hillary.
If that is your take then couldn't it be true that she was also a great woman who deserves the mural even if you happen to think it is also true that she should have known any of this would happen in 2013?
Can it be true that we only blame HRC and RGB but men have always been more in control?
It would be easier to agree if you weren't erasing how unprecedented it was for Republicans to go a year with a confirmation hearing and then push one through in a month after she died.
She did nothing wrong by all established norms and rules. There was no reason for her to foresee any of this.
Let’s be specific, it was corporate Warhawk dem women in the DCCC that stole the primary from Bernie who would have won by a mile. Fuck Hillary Clinton and the Dick Named Bill she rode in on.
This is all it is, right? Its just projection that you assume Berine supporters didnt vote for Hilary because you know full well if it was reversed that you 100% would not have voted for him.
RBG was diagnosed with cancer in '99. She died at 87 years old. How fucking long did you think she would live? Gambling the court's future on a historically unpopular, scandal ridden candidate instead of asking someone in their 80s to retire is why people hate the Democrats.
Anthony Kennedy stepped down when he was 81 because he knew he would not live forever and he wanted to be replaced by a Republican. The Republicans are so much better at operating strategically than the Dems. The Democrats need to stop letting their ancient politicians hold onto power until they die
Thank you, I don't see how people don't see this is another version of blaming a woman for collective misdeeds. Roe would still have been overturned. It just may have been 5-4 instead of 6-3. 🤷♀️
Dems tend to not hold themselves to account, when they should. Dem leaders are killing the party, they all want to be immortal vampires, they all want to preach to voters who get rightly turned off by patronization. On and on. Every big Dem moment was ushered in by a surprising new voice.
Ok when you find the perfect human that you deem worthy of admiration and 💯 fault free you let us know. Humans are flawed and yet can be and do amazing things.
There are MANY factors that led to the current makeup of the Court. McConnell’s refusal in 2016 to allow Senate to consider Obama nominee Garland to fill the seat of Scalia. Trump’s campaign to get Justice Kennedy to resign in 2018. RBG's death at an inconvenient time should not erase all the good.
It did erase all the good tho. And there’s really just two reasons it’s not a liberal majority. Mitch McConnell and RGB. Hard to argue differently. They’re on equal footing for destroying scotus and possibly democracy as we knew it.
I understand the sentiment. I refuse to erase all the good she did. The woman had cancer 5 times and beat it. She didn't know that she would die this time. And tiny as she was, that woman was fit and fierce. And I just know that if she KNEW that she would die, she would have chosen differently.
Do you know what the 5yr survival rate of pancreatic cancer is? 13%… that’s how selfish and egotistical RGB was. Selfishly she had a hand in totally destroying SCOTUS for our lifetime.
It matters that because of her you had privileges you never would have. It matters that you'd rather blame her for what's wrong with America now instead of your current fascist government and the people that elected them. It matters that you've lost your democracy and have yet to take it back.
She was well into her 80’s. She had pancreatic cancer. She knew she was dying from that. She saw what was coming and her ego destroyed all the good she did. It doesn’t matter if you refuse to accept that. Look around at what has happened. Amy Coney Barrett is her legacy.
Obama did it to prove that the Republicans would refuse any nomination by him, even a Republican. He was right. Why Biden hired him, that's a very good and different question.
Everyone in this thread agrees that mortality does indeed exist and that SCOTUS is fucked by its current makeup but can't agree that being in her 80s facing stage 4 cancer wasn't a reason for her to step down. 🤦🏾♀️
Meanwhile if any your parents were forced to work into their 80s to maintain their health coverage to pay for their cancer treatment you'd be foaming at the mouth...
You all are something else.
Though I have admiration for RBG’s many courageous actions, I too was thinking about this today after hearing the SCOTUS ruling. Likewise Joe Biden. Hubris is a bitch.

BETTER THINGS ARENT POSSIBLE !!!!
Liberals are fucking useless
Id rather fucking talk to libertarians at this point, Jesus Christ.
She deserves every bit of criticism and anger directed at her for not doing what was right, and that was to step the fuck down.
Generational & regime change NOW.
except Sally, she's cool

RBG doesn’t she was an 80+ cancer patient when Obama was there
Are you similarly infuriated that Thurgood Marshall died at an "inconvenient" time, allowing for Clarence Thomas to replace him?
Packing the court is akin to "fetch": not happening.
That said, Biden's colossal fuckup IMO was clearly his failure to bow out of any reelection talk early on.
“400$ of it came from Trump already…“,
“I’m a transition president, one term…”,

Instead of understanding why this shit is infuriating, they're being petulant children and telling us we should be thankful for them lol
You're wrong, and the party needs to evolve past these ancient dust bags taking up space and stopping any real progress from happening.
Borscht bully bitches.
One problem with this discussion is you folks love to dish out the vitriol but dont know how anything works.
If one is 74 with throat cancer why would you continue as a congressman? This is not about age but understanding one’s own human limits. Too much is at stake.
This is all Ruth's fault.
Can it be true that we only blame HRC and RGB but men have always been more in control?
Hanging on until the bitter end was definitely her fault.
She made it like 7 years after his term ended so she should have retired 11 years before she died?
Do we ask men to step aside like that ever?
How is It any more her fault than yours?
She did nothing wrong by all established norms and rules. There was no reason for her to foresee any of this.
Ginsburg was smart enough to know what was at stake if she stayed. She should have retired immediately after 45 won.
It's my opinion that she should have retired within Obama's first year.
And that's my opinion.
YMMV
If You didnt vote for Hillary you voted for this. Not Ruth's fault, not HRC's.
It’s about being strategic.
Why didn't she foresee HRC losing and McConnell stealing a seat? Why didnt she know she would die and retire at a strategic time?
So we blame her like no one was actually in power letting the unforeseeable happen.
Naaah, I'm not sure Bernie would've won by a mile. We would've figured out his angle & sat schit out.
How was she gambling the court? You really expect her to know the future?
She was in good health in 2013 and would go on to live 7 more years, almost making to the end of Trump's term.
A few months in to 2016 Mitch McConnel refused a confirmation hearing over SC nominee Merrick Garland.
She could have safely retired AFTER that seat was filled in a normal world like she had lived in for 83ish years.
The scapegoat, problem, agitators of all of mankind's dilemmas rests at the feet of women is beyond tired.
