The benefit of a floating exchange rate is its ability to quickly absorb shocks to the economy. Theoretically, a depreciation of the dollar makes it cheaper for foreign investors to buy U.S. goods and financial assets, reinvigorating the U.S. economy and ameliorating the damage of the shock. #Econ

This is not the first time that a domestic shock reduced the demand for the dollar. Just recently we saw the dollar losing value in the 2017-2018 period and again in 2020-21 as the U.S. went through periods of increased policy uncertainty. #Econ #EconSky

This plays into the administration’s plans for the economy. A weak dollar makes exports cheaper and more desirable to foreign countries. Trump is stupid enough to think that means manufacturing companies will want to relocate here as a result. A cheaper dollar won’t get cheap enough for that.
