I always put my handbrake on at a red and if it’s just changed I’ll sometimes shift into N if I’m in an automatic.

Driving the trucks you always put the parking / handbrake on. In case you have a heart attack or something and the truck rolls away.

Doing it in the car is just second nature.

As I’ve replied elsewhere, my Cupra Born has no handbrake at all, physical or button. Only option at the lights would be to put the car in Park which is massively counterintuitive.

"My" Superb has a similar shifter arrangement and I *do* put it into park if I'm stopped at lights for a while at night - it's not *that* counterintuitive and not difficult to put it back into drive when the lights turn green either.

I just think the Highway Code is outdated. If people don’t want people to keep the brake pressed at lights, don’t let manufacturers do it. I sit at lights with no pedals pressed yet the brake lights are on. That’s on Cupra.

You realise there’s still a small lever/button (sometimes now known as parking brake or E-brake) that you press to effectively put on the “handbrake” and stop blinding the driver behind with your brake lights, as stated should be done in the Highway Code. 🙄

Just engage the parking brake and, if you car has auto hold, it releases the parking brake automatically when you pull away. You don’t need to be disabling and enabling the auto hold feature itself. And you shouldn’t sit with your brake lights on - rule 114.

By the way, my car, being an EV, doesn’t have a parking brake button at all. All I can do is put my car in ‘Park’ every time I stop a lights which is fucking ridiculous.

You must be American. It’s been many years since any car has had a foot operated parking brake here in the UK. Most have a hand brake, but that is now a switch, or nonexistent as in mine. The only Parking button is to put it in Park.

That's the weirdest rule I've ever heard of. The rest of the world survives without this rule and no one in the history of this universe has ever been blinded by brake lights.
