In Scots Gealic lore, 'cait sìth' is a faerie cat, a faerie that takes the shape of a black cat with a distinctive white spot on it's chest. also: 'lucha sìth', the 'faerie mouse'; 'cu sìth', the 'faerie dog'. via The Folklore Press #caturday #folklore #Scotland

My cartoon for this week’s @theguardian.com Books

The nuances in tone, the landing of a punchline, the twin joys of reading out loud and listening to what is being read. These are human traits and human pleasures and AI cannot deliver it - only imitate. What next? AI written books and poems? www.theguardian.com/books/2025/m...

OK, this is wild. In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them. It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*. What the HELL? 1/

My book is here, and she's a beauty. Thanks so much @micaelaalcaino.bsky.social and @chickenhousebooks.bsky.social - The Scream of the Whistle, out 5th June.

🧵Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand: A woman (40s?) wearing a soft-looking knitted green dress kneels down in front of a small human (5?). He's vision impaired and as he's enveloped in a big hug, he exclaims: "It's the teddy dress!" She laughs: "Yeah kiddo. Just for you." (1)

IT'S WORKING GUESS WHO GOT A #StundentInc SLOT! ✨summoning intensifies✨

“Hmm, I wonder why the ground looks green?” “Oh!” 🤯

just so you all know bc books are a very opaque business... any way you buy/borrow a book is fantastic, but getting hard copies is *significantly* better for the author because that number shows up in an antiquated database called BookScan that publishers prize. ebooks & audio don't.

It's not legitimate to segregate disabled people either. There already aren't enough disabled toilets, and their provision if often an after thought. Our political goal needs to be more, accessible toilets for everyone.

Cis women in Ireland need to talk to other cis women in our lives and pour water on the kind of thinly veiled, soft-sounding bigotry that's creeping into people's social media and minds before we fully go the way of the UK. TERFs are claiming to speak FOR us - we need to speak for ourselves. Loudly.

Tomorrow, a certain online mega-retailer launches a book sale, just days before Indie Bookstore Day on 4/26. This is no coincidence; Bookstore Day is one of the largest revenue drivers for indies. Indies need our support to thrive & build community spaces for all...mega-retailers do not.

Botox is a crucial and effective treatment for various migraine disorders, with only 1 other treatment option available for many. It's already hugely expensive if you're not lucky enough to get into 1 of the 2 clinics that'll cover costs. This could be utterly catastrophic for suffering patients

Remember, Fionn Mac Cumhaill had two Irish wolfhounds, and every member of the Fianna was a warrior *poet*. So if you hear any ravenous baying it's because some lúdramán stole art with earth-eating tech and therefore deserves the wrath of Bran and Sceolán

As someone who has quit a minimum wage job in the past over an order from the top that I disagreed morally with, I can promise you no job is worth your integrity and humanity. This is a conscious choice.

Good things are coming. ✨I SUMMON THEM✨

I wanna add a joke about Tantalus but I can't quite grasp it

Same with Irish surnames that have an apostrophe

A little while ago, my parents' cat Bridget went missing. As the weeks dragged on, they became extremely worried. My dad devised a way to distract himself: he began to paint Bridget's adventures, imagining her travelling through time and popping up in some of art and music's most iconic scenes.

financial advice in a weird time: -- develop a plan -- find friends who support you -- preferably 10 of them -- steal $160 million from the Bellagio, the Mirage, and the MGM Grand -- yes those are Terry Benedict's casinos -- get your wife back -- one of the friends should be Don Cheadle btw simple

It's been seventeen years and that scene with the minotaur in Narnia: Prince Caspian still d e s t r o y s me. No, I have not forgiven Peter AND I NEVER WILL

Publishing finances that dictate that most authors can only afford to write if they make a living doing something else (and have time and space to write around their work) work directly against the drive for more voices from marginalised communities. I don't know how we unpick that. And it stinks.

*pterodactyl screeching* MY BELOVED

I would be remiss not to mention

There's nostalgia and then there's this villainy

Working on my first embroidery project and the fancy sparkly wool I'm using has claimed THREE threaders AND a needle. I shall not be bested ... but *outmatched sailor voice* I think I'm gonna need a bigger needle

I'd like to move over to LibraOffice (or similar if anyone has any recs) from Microsoft Office. Writey friends who know both, how's the learning curve, slash should such a change not be done during a draft that has detailed verse formatting? #booksky #kidlit

Reminded this evening- I was at a department store looking for a bra and this 60 ish year old guy came up to me. I braced in dread, but really softly he asked, “Can I ask you for some help? My wife just had a mastectomy and I want to get her something that will make her feel pretty but is soft.”

Let’s consider that humans walked on the feckin’ moon over fifty years ago, and Ireland has still never had a female Taoiseach. #InternationalWomensDay
