BACK-TO-BACK STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS!!!

Viewpoint in JAMA details the consequences of the proposed cuts to NIH: ❌15% reduction in new therapies ❌reduction in life expectancy by 83M life years in the US = $8.2T ❌loss of $51B in economic output annually All to save $20B annually. The math ain't mathin.' jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

To put these top-line budget numbers in context, cuts of this magnitude would effectively mean no new grants in FY2026. The entire extramural budget would go to existing, continuing grants. An abject failure of American ambition. And a betrayal of our global leadership in health science innovation.

Folks at Princeton have put together an aggregator to highlight example of how federally funded research has directly impacted people's lives. They are looking for more studies to highlight, so send along suggestions and help make the benefits of science more visible! publicusaresearchbenefits.com

They blame pollution but cut the EPA and clean air and water regulations. They blame poor nutrition but cut SNAP and programs to bring local produce to schools. They blame increased screen time while destroying public infrastructure that connects people. All while they take millions off healthcare.

If you’re a scientist with even a little bit of experience talking about your science to the public, I’d encourage you to sign up to do one of these. I can help. 🧪🌎🦑

Russell Vought, acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, has canceled plans to more tightly regulate the sale of Americans’ sensitive personal data. www.wired.com/story/cfbp-q...

Honestly, Pope Popcorn IX feels right

I, for one, am tired of [gestures broadly]. I have grown weary of [points in all directions simultaneously].

🚨 Cool new project alert 🚨 WE- you, me, everyone- need to work together to get important science messages out to people. 4 artists & 3 scientists collab'd on these posters. We hope YOU will put them out in your community. Each poster comes w/info about each topic. Get 'em Squidfacts.bigcartel.com

We’re now learning that air pollution sneaks in to shape developing brain in children and adolescents. Our latest @hertinglab.bsky.social study looked at brain MRIs from 10,095 children and found that exposure to specific sources of PM2.5 is related to differences in gray matter morphology… (1/2)

Me on Independent Bookstore Day

Please consider making a public comment opposing the possibility of making NIH directors, program officers, and other staff (e.g. SRO, GMS) political appointees. This only took me ~90 seconds. Please repost. Thanks 👍

Somehow unlike 31 other franchises the Baltimore Ravens make a good pick every year

Fred and I went on a cute little run just now. It wasn't far, it wasn't fast, but it was pain-free!! For context:

"...survivors of California's 2018 Camp Fire experience prolonged symptoms of PTSD, anxiety and depression alongside hyper-distractibility,"... "This new study suggests that climate trauma may also impact important cognitive abilities of decision-making and underlying brain function."'

A labor-of-love paper I've been working on for *years* was just accepted! 💃🏼 🧪👩🏼‍🔬🧠 (stay tuned for The Post)

Doing the right thing for stupid reasons. That's the American way baybeeeeeee

I'm an independent woman. I laugh at my own jokes.

Sports.

I don't even like golf and I'm having A Moment about this

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die. Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

Charles Barkley certainly liked that first half from Auburn. 🏀🎙️

Me, an Auburn fan (alumna) in the family group chat full of people who graduated from/paid tuition to UF:

Tahaad Pettiford has the highest TBN (That Boy Nice) in Auburn history.

every once in a while i'm struck with how deeply obscene it is that in the face of global warming, our biggest corporations & political leaders are pushing so hard for LLMs and generative "A.i." in everything, when that trash not only spreads bullshit but also wastes massive amounts of energy

me: pardon me while I slip into something more comfortable *returns to the sea*

I've already had two federal grants terminated and face a 33% pay cut due to future terminations. It's painful, but not as painful as the conversations I'm having every day with brilliant trainees in graduate school and postdoctoral positions who see little future for themselves in US science.

Wow what timing. Who needs environmental health anyway? 💀 www.wired.com/story/cdc-gu...

The @hertinglab.bsky.social is on a roll, friends. New from Nate Overholtzer: age, sex, and BMI differences in amygdala and its subregions. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40139048/

New review from Jess Morrel & the @hertinglab.bsky.social exploring links between air pollution and the developing brain. tl;dr: this literature is growing, but there are still gaps in time (sensitive exposure windows, timing of exposure -> brain changes) and space (most data from US/Europe)

If I was Auburn, I would simply not turn the ball over.
