Bought some standard rosemary plants, some low growing ones, and some oregano plants yesterday. They’ve all been potted and will be put outside the front of the house as it’s very sunny there. I’ve a large lavender plant to put but am out of compost. That’ll wait until later in the week. Time to […]

Log burner lit. Having a few beers to mark the weekend. Cheers.

A busy and varied day has slowed down. Curry has been enjoyed, and beer is happening. It's been 10 weeks since dad died and that gives more perspective. It's been kind of tough and these weeks have been challenging at times, but that's the way of grief. It's a process to work through and to […]

Hedges done. Tests on iPad batter reveal it’s apparently in good shape and so the device has been reset and I’ve set it up as a new device and not restored from any backups. We shall see whether that clears things up or not.

Haircut achieved. Time for a quick shower to freshen up, then off to pick up some flowers at the florist. After that I’m away to Sheffield. I love a sunny Saturday getting things done. Think I’ll cut the hedges this afternoon then the house will look a bit nicer too.

Recycling done. Around 10 cars arrived when the place opened and they all had garden waste as there have been no collections yet this year. Much grumbling and people talking about having contacted their councillor to complain. I approve!

Up and at ‘em! Got a list of things I need to do, starting with a walk with Dottie. After that it’s breakfast, then taking the green waste to the recycling ‘cos the council have effed up their collections, then a haircut, then a visit to get my iPad sorted as the battery is no longer good at […]

Finished work a little early, took Dottie out, and then got the grocery shopping done. One less task for tomorrow! Let the weekend commence!

Friday 09/05/2025. #MorningDogWalkFeatured swallows on the phone wires basking in the early sun, a gentle valley frost making grass blades seem painted white, a pair of roe deer watching us from further down the lane, and a neighbour heading off to work and singing as he goes.

In the office today and have a tricky HR-related thing to deal with. I'm prepared, very prepared, but it's the first time I've done this so it feels rather huge. I'll be fine but I recall the days when organisations had HR departments which dealt with this stuff.

Thursday 08/05/2025. #MorningDogWalkFeatured a traffic jam of dog walkers at the meeting of three paths, wheelie bins filled with recycling waiting to offload, a buzzard being hassled by a pair of angry crows, and a lane lined with hawthorn bushes in blossom like new brides.

THE SWIFTS ARE BACK!

Wednesday 07/05/2025. #MorningDogWalkFeatured still morning air filled with sunlight and birdsong, two joggers' rhythmic footsteps moving down the lane, deep drifts of poplar fluff along the footpath edge, and buzzards starting our their day calling from the trees.

Tuesday 06/05/2025. #MorningDogWalkFeatured a gentle valley frost turning grass to silver/white, to dog walkers laughing as they head along the train, woodsmoke gently drifting from a cottage chimney pot, and rabbits in the field-edge quickly hiding as we pass.

I am making dinner. I have loved having a break from real cooking but it’s good to be back in an actual kitchen and be getting busy.

Home. Laundry on. Off to the shops for groceries and then I can relax. Thanks for joining me on the #BGSBirthdayRoadTrip folks 😊

20 miles to go.

We are but 55 miles from home and should be there in an hour. The #BGSBirthdayRoadTrip is drawing to a close. It’s been amazing, and I’m ever so lucky to that we could do this to celebrate my birthday.

Lincolnshire!

Comfort break achieved and back on the go. Now expecting to be home by 14:00 as long as the A1 is kind to us. #BGSBirthdayRoadTrip

Cambridgeshire has been gained. Onwards! #BGSBirthdayRoadTrip

On this trip we set foot in France, Switzerland, and Italy. Granted the last two countries didn’t include long stops, but Dottie had a walk with us in each, so she retains her title of International Dog Of Mystery.

Back in the UK and are heading north. Satnav says we should be there for 13:30. Onwards to the end of the #BGSBirthdayRoadTrip.

And we’re off!

We set off to Le Shuttle terminal early and have been allocated a train 1.5 earlier than the one we booked. Hurrah! We should be in England for 9:30 UK time which means hopefully back home by 1pm. Splendid! Last leg of the #BGSBirthdayRoadTrip is underway.

On like the second day of this many-day storm-induced power outage (thankfully we have power now) I twanged my back by bending slightly and being old, and it's still causing me problems. But! I've said this in replies to posts but I don't think I've said it on main before so posting it here for […]

Just found a tick in Dottie’s ear. Removed it with quite a great deal of skill using some special tweezers and the little bastard has been stamped upon and flushed away. Spotted another on her bed - nasty! - and that’s been dispatched too. Dirty, evil sods that they are.

Happy Star Wars day everyone. As Spock said “The good of the knees outweigh the many of the few.”

We are arrived into Calais and have settled in at our hotel. Time for a glass of wine, a shower to freshen up, and then take in our options for dinner.

Groceries acquired. Now to fill up the van and we’re good to go. We’re already wondering when we can do our next road trip to Europe as it’s been a whole lot of fun both times we’ve done this. That said we have plenty of other adventures planned so we may have to leave it until 2026. Which […]

Today is Sunday. We are picking up a few items as the shops close at lunchtime and we don’t want to be stuck without bread, cheese, and wine for the hotel room in Calais. I know there’ll *probably* be places open but better safe than sorry right?

On the road again and the rain started just as we closed the van doors. The weather is much cooler and feels like this time of year back home. Onwards to Calais towards the end of the #BGSBirthdayRoadTrip.

J out to the east in the distance a storm is happening. We can’t hear it, but we can see the lightning flashing in the clouds like some kind of Poltergeist era Steven Spielberg effect. It’s very special.

I’m not going to feel sad about having to head home. This has been an amazing adventure and I’ve had such a wonderful time I can’t feel sad. Sure work is a pain, but I enjoy my job and there are much worse things to do to earn a wage. Having anxiety dreams featuring my now deceased parents was […]

We pitched camp next to a little metal shelter, so we’ve decamped there. If the rain comes again we can watch and enjoy.

We’ve just finished dinner, washed up, and been bought a bottle of wine at the on-site counter then a massive thunderstorm happened. We’re currently sat in the tent awning drinking wine and giggling like idiots as the rain falls down. Happy last day of the camping!

Back at the campsite from last Saturday and even got the same pitch. Dinner is cooking and we’re relaxing into the last night of camping for this trip. We’ve a chain hotel booked in Calais for tomorrow and then back to the septic isle we head.

On the road again. The campsite we stayed at was peaceful and perfectly lovely. Lots of retirees in camper vans up and off first thing today to travel who knows where. Anyhoo, we have left now and are heading northwards for the last few stages of the #BGSBirthdayRoadTrip.

Okay then. Freshening up and getting ready to move on. One more night of camping, then a hotel in Calais ahead of Le Shuttle back to England on Monday. Slightly bad planning to be travelling on bank holiday Monday but there we go. *wanders off to pack things up*

Good morning tout la monde!

The rain has all about stopped so we’re going to take Dots for a walk and hit the hay. Tomorrow should bring decent weather as we continue to head northwards and back to the septic isle of Gurt Britain.

While sheltering from the rain we booked our campsite for tomorrow. It’s the one we stayed in last Saturday with the amazing buildings and cuckoos calling in the woods. It’s en route to Calais and the owners were so lovely we want to go back and also buy a few bottles of their wine and champagne […]

Fukken rain. Imagine that on the #BGSBirthdayRoadTrip. This is the fault of Reform UK and that frog-faced cesspit Farage.

Also, an avalanche warning has been issued for the area of the Alps we were in. Beginning to wonder whether I have invoked my dark powers again. *worried face*
