Since it is Juneteenth, I will share a lil something... My ancestors were slaves in Texas & were freed on June 19, 1865. They came together to meet with other ex-slaves & formed the Limestone County 19th of June Organization. They bought 30 acres of land on Lake Mexia.

Sending solidarity to my friends @ucuedinburgh.bsky.social on strike today against crap management. Picketing in sunshine not snow must be a strange feeling!

Massive thanks to Lieven Heeremans and everyone at Sheffield DocFest, for a wonderful night at the festival. Also, to Alex Quinn and Pete and Bonnie from Good Habits who performed live reworking of football chants as part of the talk…

Eagerly anticipating this new book from @dominicmhinde.bsky.social which, excitingly, brings together travelogue, memory and environmental history in its search for possibilities of renewal and a more sustainable future.

Here is the video of the talk I gave Monday about *Freedom Ship* in the Boston-based American Ancestors/American Inspiration Author Series. After the talk, it was my pleasure to discuss the book with Lee Blake of the New Bedford Historical Society. www.americanancestors.org/video-librar...

This is tonight - going to be live music by Good Habits as part of the talk… not going to be a boring academic lecture and we will be playing great outtakes that we couldn’t include in the documentary www.sheffdocfest.com/composition/...

Off to SheffieldDoc festival this morning to speak at about our BBC R4 Documentary Here awe Go: The Art of the Football chant. This pic iwith my son Charlie at Celtic Park enjoying the righteous noise of the Green Brigade.

My @uofgsocsci.bsky.social colleague Ben has a brilliant new paper out on the English NHS and international commercialisation. Given some of the "healthcare state" rhetoric around spending review last week, highly recommend a read of this. globalizationandhealth.biomedcentral.com/articles/10....

1969 - Alasdair paints the Kirkfieldbank ‘Falls of Clyde’ Mural in the tavern which shows the landscape around it. In 2009 @sorchadallas.bsky.social was contacted about Alasdair restoring it as it had fallen into disrepair. Sadly over lockdown the mural was lost once more.

Films being screened for Refugee Week

Our own Dr Adnan Hossain is hosting a two-day workshop - Transgender people in politics in the Global South: Political participation, activism and leadership - taking place 30th June - 1st July 2025.

As Alasdair Gray: The Morag McAlpine Bequest opens at Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum we want to share more about how Morag provided Alasdair with a home & stability in which to create. Her story is remembered at the archive where we have recreated their living room & dedicated a box to her ❤️

IT'S HERE. You should really listen to the whole thing, but 28m 18s if you can't wait to skip to our bit (then go back and listen to the rest). www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/... #dhfc

Fabulous day at the Green Music Festival… Zoe Graham taking it home. Great songs well sung.

A Father’s Day post as a timeline cleanser in these grim times. 1/ My paternal grandfather with my grandmother, and her with my baby father, 193X, 1941. 2/ My paternal grandfather with my late uncle Glen and my grandmother, 1960s. 3/ My dad and his siblings, 1950. 4/ Dad not so long ago.

Nice being in the ‘Green Room’ for this festival - will be playing with Beautiful Cosmos at 3.50pm - it’s stopped raining!

Wonderful to get a 4 star review in the FT for our football songs Doc… broadcast tonight at 8pm on Radio 4

Was great to talk with Prof Les Back about his new BBC Radio 4 documentary exploring the idea of football chants as folk music. Read all about it in @bigissue.com - on sale now. And listen tonight on Radio 4 and BBC Sounds…

OPENS TODAY: Alasdair Gray: Works from The Morag McAlpine Bequest at Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum feat. book cover art works for @aowensarchive.bsky.social In an interview Morag said: "I think that we probably had quite lonely times before we met. And we now know the value of being together.’

Is it a trap to see sociology as a job? As universities face a financial crisis and increasingly focus on quantifiable metrics, @academicdiary.bsky.social considers the support and structures needed to nurture a deep and rounded sociological life. Out now in our June magazine. buff.ly/U3Lm7Lf

If you're looking for something to listen to over the weekend, how about this documentary on BBC Radio 4 (Saturday at 20.00, and thereafter on BBC Sounds) with our own @academicdiary.bsky.social

Amazing to be in The Radio Times this week- if only my Mum had lived to see it! That would have been impressed her.

Join Les Back @academicdiary.bsky.social at Sheffield Doc Fest! Les will make the case for football chants being a kind of folk music and reflect his audio doc for BBC's Archive on 4. Tickets available: Thurs 19 June www.sheffdocfest.com/composition/...

Something new in the Sociological Review Magazine that’s been on my mind for a while - Lives of the Mind. I love the graphic; it reminds me of my first job. Back then, punching the clock meant you got paid overtime. thesociologicalreview.org/magazine/jun...

Please go and buy the current edition of The Big Issue, it features Adey Lobb’s brilliant article on our programme about the art of the football chant. @adey70.bsky.social is a wonderful and intelligent writer. I enjoyed visiting him in his ‘writing shed’!

RIP Sly www.theguardian.com/music/2025/j...

Sandra Harding was a huge influence on me especially as a fledgling academic; an amazing scholar

Sad news to hear of the passing of Sly Stone. Made a pilgrimage to Marcus Garvey Park (formerly Mount Morris Park) in Harlem early this year where Sly performed at the Harlem Cultural Festival in 1969. An extraordinary talent and musical life… that will live on.

Really appreciate this very positive review in The Observer of our documentary on the art of the football chant that will be broadcast this coming Saturday at 8pm.

With Tony Witter and producer Alex Quinn at The Den. Tony’s pointing to where squad players would sit in the ground. So pleased he will be featured in our Archive on 4 programme in football songs.
