In my beloved Lisbon to participate in the 2025 workshop of @icesmarine.bsky.social WG MIXFISH - METHODS. Looking forward to meeting colleagues, seeing amazing presentations and discussing mixed fisheries methodologies!

📣 Just out! @FAO.org has released the most detailed report ever on the state of marine fish stocks! The data shows that some of the world’s fisheries are recovering thanks to effective, science-based management. 👉 bit.ly/4l0LV28 #UNOC3 #BlueTransformation

They were amazing! 😍 a field of sabellid #polychaetes for early #wormwednesday

My first ever dive over a polychaete field together with the amazing (and expert on all-things-polychaete) @sarahfaulwetter.bsky.social!

To give you an idea of the scope of #MOBS onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/.... There are 52,505 species of marine Mollusk, MOBS has body size data for 46,110 of them (88%).

Proposals for our Special Feature with @journalofecology.bsky.social & @peopleandnature.bsky.social are still open! 🌎 If you're looking to further understanding of the ecological & evolutionary consequences of novel communities in different systems, find out more below! 🧪 👉 bit.ly/4jqpxy1

Hey look! Glowing fishes evolved over and over again. Lots of color of glow. @emilycarr.bsky.social led a team that included 5 FHL folks @jmhuie.bsky.social @lampichthys.bsky.social and @karlycohen.bsky.social. The oldest glowy fish is an eel at 100MYA. 🧪 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Leaving Hamburg after four days of intense (yet always friendly) discussions at the @icesmarine.bsky.social WG COMEDA meeting. Highlight photo from the (out of the meeting, after the official dinner) onboard night tour to the commercial port. See you all next year!

Packing up to go to Hamburg for the annual meeting of the @icesmarine.bsky.social Working Group on Comparative Ecosystem-based Analyses of Atlantic & Mediterranean marine systems (COMEDA). Looking forward to seeing familiar faces, meeting new ones & discussing the amazing science they are all doing!

Last week we explored an area with our new ROV and came across this gorgeous field of sabellid #polychaete worms. We don't know the species and generally not much about these aggregations. But they are very beautiful! #wormwednesday

Hello––Is A River Alive? is published in the US & Canada on 20 May. I am coming on tour––dates & locations below––& would love to speak of the book’s ideas, people & rivers to as many folk as possible while I'm out there. Please let anyone know who you think might want to come to an event. Cheers!

This is an absolute disaster. If we don't stop this, they will turn NSF into a pawn of the Trump administration. There will be no research on climate, biodiversity, or anything that isn't eugenics or AI or how to more efficiently destroy the planet for profit. This cannot be allowed to happen.

Could integrating human behaviour into the conservation of marine resources hold the potential to tackle pressing challenges in sustainability & ensure the longevity of our oceans for generations to come? 📄Read what the Working Group on Maritime Systems #WGMARS say 👉 www.ices.dk/news-and-eve...

I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.

Lots of people on my feed are concerned about the destruction of NOAA by the Trump administration and Elon Musk, but much of what I’ve seen people post about is the national weather service. That’s vital, but NOAA does so much more than that! My latest, for @ucsusa.bsky.social 🧪🌎🦑🐠

My pet gar that I donated to Shedd Aquarium would recognize me and swim over to say hi when I visited her exhibit ❤️🐠 A rare hybrid gar, I raised her since she was 2 inches long, and had to re-home her when I moved to Chicago. I was happy I could visit her in her new home! TO BE CONTINUED…

Is A River Alive? is published today, 1 May. It’s about the lives, deaths & rights of rivers—& how our fate flows with that of water & always has. To the people, places & rivers whose ideas run through its pages, thank you so much. I think it’s the book I’ve been learning to write all these years.

📢 New paper alert! 🐋❄️ How do different-sized #cetaceans stay warm in cold waters? Our latest study in @jexpbiol.bsky.social revealed that smaller species rely on thicker blubber, while larger ones offset heat loss simply by being big. Read more: doi.org/10.1242/jeb.... #UAVs

What follows if we imagine rivers as having lives, deaths––& even rights? I wrote this essay about water & hope; imagining rivers “otherwise”; nature’s rights; grammars of animacy; & how our fate flows with that of rivers—& always has. I received a heartbreaking email today: A paper in a special issue I’m editing is being retracted because one of its authors is afraid of losing their job and their legal status in the U.S. if they publish a scientific study on evolution. Yes, on evolution, nature's engine of diversity.
