Happy free car wash day in Winnipeg to all who celebrate. Somberly, this rain is desperately needed. There have been 80 forest fires this year (well above the avg of 48) and we’ve broken many May heat records. 1000 people current evacuated. Climate change is real. This is what it looks like.

Among the books I will never write is one about how the right wing, largely based in Alberta, managed to convince a national media that they are analogous with and can speak for “the west.”

I wrote this in a week where it felt like professoring while parenting (and equally, parenting while professoring) was impossible. This feeling ebbs and flows. Seems like Mothers Day is as good a time as any to share, maybe it will help someone else feel less alone. The More Paradox 1/8

“The findings suggest that if scientists want to increase public urgency around climate change, they should highlight clear, concrete shifts instead of slow-moving trends. That could include the loss of white Christmases or outdoor summer activities canceled because of wildfire smoke.”

Big story from @reportrix.bsky.social today: Alberta chief electoral officer warns UCP proposals will hurt investigative ability www.thecanadianpressnews.ca/politics/alb...

trust me: this is one of the most unexpectedly charming and heartwarming YouTube videos you will ever see youtu.be/QSMDb1CWD6Y?...

Totally here for Mark Carney giving Jim Halpert face in the Oval Office. #elbowsUp

I'm very impressed with this article by @science.org highlighting how the destruction of science in the US is impacting the careers of scientists who are, you know, real people. They did a great job of capturing my fears and frustrations around my career. www.science.org/content/arti...

My oldest starts "big kid" soccer this week, with a different field for each game. I just looked up where the first game was and had an instant memory of being 17 and flipping pages of the map book, lost somewhere in the city and trying to find an obscure soccer field location. Those were the days.

As a long-suffering Jets-Leafs-Leafs+Jets fan, this feeling is … confusing. Go Jets!!! #NHLJets #GoJetsGo

I saw someone complaining that they were missing their hockey community over here compared to the bad place. Glad that’s not the case for #NHLJets !! #GoJets

Quite the quote.

Today Google AI confidently told me that the galaxy M96 is a member of the Virgo Cluster. Friends, I have studied the Virgo Cluster for years. M96 is most definitely not in Virgo. If AI is wrong about the things you know about, it's also almost certainly wrong about all the things you don't.

Meanwhile, in Canada ... #onbrand (There are 2 debates before the Canadian election, one in French, one in English. Important to note this would only happen for the Montréal Canadiens or the Toronto Maple Leafs. Meanwhile, the Winnipeg Jets finished on top!!! and you would never know it from TSN).

What? @acgerstein.bsky.social made it to being interviewed on As It Happens!!! Casting a critical light on headhunting of US scientific talent. I completely agree with Aleeza, an inefficient funding mechanism. www.cbc.ca/listen/live-...

Grad student applicants from the US: University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada) has re-opened applications for Master's and PhD programs (e.g., biomed engineering, genetics). Info sessions Apr. 15th w/ current US students: www.grad.ubc.ca/us-applicant... Stable, awesome environment!!

An interesting behind the scenes look at Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre's campaign stop in Petty Harbour, Newfoundland from veteran journalist @greglocke.bsky.social who was on assignment for Reuters. canadianjournalist.ca/poilievre-ca...?

Tourism Winnipeg was just being playful with its April Fools’ blog post that dubbed Winnipeg the “middle child” of Canada.

Aaron Bernstein giving an extremely diplomatic interview with @faithfundal.bsky.social on @cbcradiocanada.bsky.social about the “unique flavour profile” of Manishevitz wine being “borderline” too sweet. The buy Canadian movement led to the unavailability of this traditional Passover wine in Canada.

This piece should have explained that Canada’s tricouncil research structure—which funds the bulk of our discovery and medical research—is underfunded, making it challenging to absorb an influx of US scientists. No political leader has proposed to increase CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC research budgets. 🧪

rebranding the 15 min city.

I’m devastated, but I’m also angry. I’m angry because this is an attack on press freedom. If opportunities can be stripped from journalists simply because enough people repeat the same bad-faith narrative, how can anyone withstand the career impact of doing work that matters?
