Simone Biles, continuing to prove she’s the GOAT

Your reminder that Humboldt Fog cheese, Humboldt County, CA, the Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti),and the Humboldt Current that allows wine grapes to grow in Chile are all named for an 18th C gay scientist whose love letters were all burned and who left his entire estate to his “valet.” 🏳️‍🌈

New: A DOGE staffer developed an AI tool to review Veterans Affairs contracts. But there was a slight hitch. It hallucinated the size of those deals. For example, it concluded that more than a thousand contracts were each worth $34M, when in fact some were for as little as $35,000.

I'm just glad one of these men has the nuclear codes and the other has all our personal data.

I can tell some of you people have never watched the WWF/WWE. Elon is doing a classic “heel turn.” This builds tensions and keeps ratings high. By Electomania 2028, liberals will try to tag Elon in, but he’ll refuse. Then, when Trump is about to be pinned, he’ll bit Dems with a steel chair.

Yaasss!

Folks Trump has no authority to fire the National Portrait Gallery director and no one need report it as if he does

So much recent media coverage has focused on how Musk is leaving the WH & politics, how he disapproves of Trump's bill, etc. Such conflict is irresistible for mainstream news. But the story we should be hearing is how Musk has caused tremendous lasting damage. And for that he must never be forgiven.

Couldn't agree more with this. It's jaw-dropping to see the patty cake people are playing with him after what was a full constitutional assault that, oh by the way, is almost certainly going to lead to tens of thousands of people in the global south dying needlessly.

Every time I hear people argue that democrats need better messaging I come to the realization that one party is playing by old rules where facts matter and the other has gone all-in on flat out lies, and it works because the media writes more about how the facts aren't messaged well than the lies 🤷‍♂️

I wish journalists would stop framing political news as wins or losses for politicians or political parties. It’s an abrogation of our mission. Why do we keep doing this? Is the spending bill a win or loss for the American people? Who does it help? Who does it hurt? Is it sound policy? Fiscally?

Just another day in Charlotte Square here in Edinburgh. Yes that’s man on a bike in full Polo attire, hitting a ball down the street. My first visit here. And it’s wonderful to be in Edinburgh.

JERUSALEM (AP) — The crisis in Gaza has reached one of its darkest periods, as Israel blocks all food and supplies from entering the territory and continues an intensifying bombardment campaign.

so to be clear about what happened here, the Trump White House released audio meant to make Joe Biden look bad to Axios hours after the US's credit rating was downgraded. Trump wanted a distraction and the usual suspects in the press are happy to oblige.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like if a US exchange student in a foreign country (say, Turkey?) was imprisoned for six weeks because they wrote an op-ed in the student newspaper it would be a huge domestic story and an international incident.

The reporters' suspensions have just been lifted, which is a relief. But still, an absolute disgrace that Columbia/Barnard put reporters — who clearly identified themselves as such throughout the protest — through this.

Journalists are journalists, whether they're also students or not, and they need access to report fairly. This is a violation of press freedom.

this a violation of patient confidentiality so total that any health care practitioner or org that fails to oppose it can be written off forever

the fundamental disconnect between the manosphere and reality is that they are incapable of understanding that this is - according to every woman I’ve ever met - the sexiest thing a man has ever done

A whole generation of US women was raised hearing that feminism has cleared the runway for them, that if they work hard, they can be or achieve anything ... ... only to graduate into a professional world where sexism is still very much the rule, condescended to & passed over. And yet ...

For a little joy, check out the dress my husband made for our daughter for her birthday. They picked out the (lemon!) fabric and the pattern together, and he's spent every night since then piecing and pinning and sewing and tailoring it to get it just right. Oh, and it even has pockets ❤️

I’m not sure that I’ve seen many better visual representations of what it’s like to be a parent.

The Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 created the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. I reread it today; nothing in the law allows a president to defund PBS and NPR. In fact, Congress specifically sought to insulate public media from political pressure.

What an embarrassment. It’s wild that the official position of the US Government is now pro-Nazi.

To be clear, Germany is cracking down on a Neo-Nazi party, and the US government is defending the Neo-Nazi party

One of most alarming red flags to date. Not so much for the impact, but for what it says about Trumps’ footsoldiers’ devotion to his cult of personality. This is full-on dictator mythmaking.

I understand the appeal and potential relevance of claims that Canadians are deeply divided after this election, but I'd like to see evidence that goes deeper than the fact that different people — and different groups of people — voted for different parties.
