New Lord Mayor welcomed by Cork City Council - 42 years after his dad got the job

Really impressive artwork of the sun "Helios" in St Finbarr's Cathedral for the Cork Midsummer Festival. A sequel to the moon in MTU (2016), and the earth "Gaia" in Cobh (2022). I believe tomorrow is the last day to see it. #Cork

Mahonpoint Shopping Centre have announced major expansion plans, including approx 1/3 increase in retail space, offices and apartments, along with a multi-storey car park to replace lost car spaces.

Cork and other Irish cities could learn a lot from Lund. 🇸🇪 This small Swedish university city has a strong cycling culture, light rail, abundant green spaces, and a people-focused city centre that is enjoyable to walk around without too many cars.

Having been to Utrecht a few years ago, it's exactly what Cork should be aiming for. Traffic will certainly will get worse as long as there is no confidence in the public transport system and unsafe gaps in the active travel networks. Pro-traffic planning has dominated for too long.

Found an old newspaper from 2019 at home. Inside was an article about problems with the 220 bus route. 6 years later and nothing has changed... #Cork

Really enjoyed A History of the World in 47 Borders by @jonnelledge.bsky.social. A detailed and witty tour of the world's borders and the stories behind them, from the well-known to the ridiculous. Can highly recommend for anyone who is a map-addict like myself.

Lots of boats around the city today. #Cork

Just discovered something very random on Google Maps. This 13km x 13km square of satellite imagery to the east of Stoke-on-Trent in England shows the area covered in snow! A stark contrast to the surrounding green imagery. I wonder if there are any more tiles like this elsewhere? #Geography #Maps

Robot trees are gone! #Cork Left as ugly looking benches.

This would be amazing for both commuters and tourists. Imagine taking a ferry to go a match at Páirc Uí Chaoimh! #Cork

I remember studying his poems for the Leaving Cert. RIP

Florence trams are the complete opposite of Cork buses. Cork buses disappear from the timetable and never arrive. Florence trams make you think you have to wait but then one suddenly appears out of nowhere.

While in Florence, my inner geographer made me visit the tomb of Amerigo Vespucci, the explorer who America was named after. What a legacy to have. #Geography

Great video that's very relevant with the current talks about a Cork Luas. If Cork wants to continue growing, it has to take public transport seriously. Pro-traffic planning is bad for all. youtu.be/bNTg9EX7MLw?...

Steps - No longer a Tragedy 😎

Nice to see that Limerick and Galway cities now have 3D imagery on Google Maps/Earth. #Ireland #Geography

The River Lee looking lovely at Ballincollig Regional Park earlier today #Cork

Great to see but it's still disgraceful that the busiest route in the city has been neglected for so long. #Cork

Took the incredible Spanish high speed AVE trains on my recent trip to Spain. Seville-Madrid (390km) in around 2.5 hours. Madrid-Valencia (300km) in just under 2. For comparison, Cork to Belfast is 340km. More of the world badly needs high speed trains!

Spent the last 12 days travelling between the beautiful Spanish cities of Seville, Madrid and Valencia. All were incredible places with fascinating histories and culture. A reminder that visiting Spain can be so much more than just a beach holiday! 🇪🇸

Watching the hurling league final from sunny Seville. Brilliant win for Cork! Shoutout to The Merchant Irish Pub for showing the match. #Cork

Yet another post of appreciation for Cork Airport. Super fast through security, friendliest staff and close to home. What else do you want? Looking forward to flying to Seville to begin a trip across Spain. 🇪🇸

Cork city buses to have 'tap and go' on all routes by year end The National Transport Authority plans to install Leap card validators on an entry pole at the front door of each bus.

Saw NTA ticket inspectors on the 220 for the first time ever today. I wonder whether they will be more frequent now or was it just a once off? #Cork

Launch of consultation for Cork Light Rail route will take place in the Millennium Hall, City Hall, on Monday April 14, and will be attended by the Lord Mayor Dan Boyle; Taoiseach Micheál Martin; and minister for transport Darragh O’Brien.

One for the diary next Thursday, April 10th, at The Biodiversity Hub in Ballincollig - Rewilding Ireland with Padraic Fogarty Great opportunity to join the conversation on rewilding and conservation in Cork and beyond.

Walked the Grange to Tramore Valley Park Greenway for the first time today. Lovely path though the woodland for both pedestrians and cyclists. Well done to the city council. However, it bewilders me that there's no pedestrian crossing on Grange Road at the end of it. #Cork

One of two new pedestrian bridges ready to be put in place at the old Beamish & Crawford Site. I wonder for how long will it be a bridge to nowhere? #Cork

Brilliant performance from the lads this evening. Lovely sunset view from the Blackrock End also. #Cork

Great to see such a big crowd for the Paddy's Day parade in Ballincollig. Brilliant showcase of the local community. ☘️ #Cork

Bergen has a similar population to Cork but is actively trying to improve its public transport and cycling. It does this despite hills and frequent bad weather. Irish cities favour choking in car traffic instead. youtu.be/JCedclz03uI?...

A number of diversions will be in place in Cork City throughout St. Patrick's Day. Plan ahead now to minimise disruptions to your Monday commute.
