A family friend took me to see Raiders of the Lost Ark when I was 8. He remembered to cover my eyes for the helicopter scene, but not for the ark scene. That left a mark.

Not the most important takeaway - but I love stacked bar graphs that show composition. Descriptive reports that say "88% of black voters are Democrats" vastly outnumber those that say "black voters are 18% of Democrats." But the latter is arguably more important for understanding the electorate.

I just came across this bit of advice from my last book. I stand by it more than ever. But damn, it's been heeded to the same degree that my Boston Terriers heed my "don't eat that!" command. In fact, the need to define "bias" has all but disappeared if your N is big and your math is fancy 🤷‍♂️

Profs: do NOT use GPT-detection software. No amount of true detection can undo the damage of acting on even a single false positive. Of course it's unfair that our already-full docket now includes being a robot detector. But the solution is never to hurt innocent students (and your reputation).

Same. Grandpa did air support over D-Day about 30 years after his dad fled what's now Belarus, just steps ahead of a pogrom. But who the hell knows whose side Miller would have taken in either WWII or the Russian Empire, so perhaps there's no inconsistency here.

This reminds me of a dream I had the night before I started high school. I was watching a soap opera in which a couple was arguing loudly in their living room. Then, with a jarring suddenness that even a soap opera wouldn't have attempted, a tornado blew in and obliterated their home. 1/2
