New on SSRN: “Laboratory of Autocracy,” draft paper with @amykristinsanders.bsky.social on Texas’ assault on the First Amendment over the past decade. We reviewed & coded 400+ incidents in the Abbott/Patrick/Paxton era, not all of which reached the courts. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

A family friend took me to see Raiders of the Lost Ark when I was 8. He remembered to cover my eyes for the helicopter scene, but not for the ark scene. That left a mark.

Who the heck is still buying my first book? Sales have actually accelerated, and at this pace, I’m only 32 years away from earning my first penny on it.

Not the most important takeaway - but I love stacked bar graphs that show composition. Descriptive reports that say "88% of black voters are Democrats" vastly outnumber those that say "black voters are 18% of Democrats." But the latter is arguably more important for understanding the electorate.

I just came across this bit of advice from my last book. I stand by it more than ever. But damn, it's been heeded to the same degree that my Boston Terriers heed my "don't eat that!" command. In fact, the need to define "bias" has all but disappeared if your N is big and your math is fancy 🤷‍♂️

Profs: do NOT use GPT-detection software. No amount of true detection can undo the damage of acting on even a single false positive. Of course it's unfair that our already-full docket now includes being a robot detector. But the solution is never to hurt innocent students (and your reputation).

Same. Grandpa did air support over D-Day about 30 years after his dad fled what's now Belarus, just steps ahead of a pogrom. But who the hell knows whose side Miller would have taken in either WWII or the Russian Empire, so perhaps there's no inconsistency here.

The “Acknowledge any university beyond the super-elites challenge” . . .not accepted.

I hate this argument. Go look up who receives fed spending in red states and tell me if you still think it’s unfair/unwise 🙄

😡😡😡

These graphs are bleak. But labeling the three most recent economic crises as "Global financial crisis," Covid pandemic," and "Trump" hits that sweet spot of being hilarious and also totally accurate.

Law schools should require Elementary Statistics.

They're both trying to destroy my body and mind -- but at least pollen is doing so in service of a greater good.

Come on, y'all. I don't mind straining the truth a bit to defeat a terrible bill. But the idea that SAVE will be implemented in a way that would disenfranchise most Republican women is laughable.

It may look cute but economies only do this when they are VERY STRESSED

Pol Comm folks: Are we doing a pre-conference in Vancouver? #polisky

Not how I like to see my former students in the news. I hope he gets the help he needs.

You never wanna bet against Kruse, but here’s me doing so and hoping to be wrong. There will never be a reckoning. Every left-of-center prediction that’s proven wrong over the last 9 years is some variation of “here comes the reckoning.” 1/2

I have never smuggled anything onto a plane via my groinal region, and I don’t plan to. But the TSA scanners sure believe otherwise.

Nah, this term has no Brutus. And the ones from last term are all writing books or on MSNBC having a sad.

Top story on Fox website right now. I believe this is what the kids call "beyond parody.'

This reminds me of a dream I had the night before I started high school. I was watching a soap opera in which a couple was arguing loudly in their living room. Then, with a jarring suddenness that even a soap opera wouldn't have attempted, a tornado blew in and obliterated their home. 1/2
