1/ MI has divided government, Dem Gov and Senate and GOP house. The House just released its budget - it wrecks the state's public universities. Let me explain how. Overall the higher ed budget is basically flat, ticking up from $2.3 to $2.4 billion. But here's the catch ...

#healthcomm #polcom #comsci folks at #ica25 this weekend will have informed thoughts to contribute I imagine

Evergreen #ica25 tips - Go to top paper panels in other divisions. Go to business meetings, those are the room(s) where it happens. Go to at least 1 random panel for fun. Hydrate, especially in Denver with high elevation. Buy snacks for your room. Have fun.

Best of luck to all MSU researchers presenting at #ICA25 this week! We encourage you to share your experiences using #MSUICA. Let’s make our presence known! See the lineup here ➡️ http://spr.ly/633254HCdZ 📍 @msujschool.bsky.social, @mediainfomsu.bsky.social, @michiganstateu.bsky.social

No private company should have this much control over higher ed. And let’s be clear: OpenAI’s vision is for *their commercial product* to become part of the core infrastructure of higher ed- not AI in general. Because they are currently not a profitable company.

Apparently, I will be giving my seminar on modeling next year. We will mostly be looking at models and playing around with them as tools for understanding. #philsci and #hps students don’t enroll enough. Why? Help me market this better!

Is anyone going to SPSP in Chicago and interested in submitting on a symposium about moral psychology and AI? 🤖

Overwhelmingly, the fact that the scientific literature is full of mistakes is because science is hard rather than because of ill intent. One might, in response to this, seek to raise the bar for evidence but the more common response of cynicism is I think flawed

The political theory behind IRA was roughly as follows: We have lost control of the information landscape and can no longer win rhetorical or purely political battles; however, if we make substantive policy progress that directly touches voters' lives, they will notice and reward us.

The 80-year recipe stoking America’s Prosperity: 1) Free-market capital investments in brilliant ideas… 2) enabled by Engineering Innovations… 3) based on Science Research in Universities… 4) funded by Grants from the US Government. It’s time more people understood this.

While the 'belief' plot draws attention, the core message of the final, deliberative consensus statements is that evidence linking smartphone and social media use to negative outcomes is limited, mixed, context-dependent, insufficient to support causal claims, and better research is needed.

In case anyone is stuck at the airport later today leaving #SANS2025, a brief task to pass the time

A grandma who works at Target. An advocate for farmworkers. A cancer researcher. A grad student who wrote an op-ed. A hairdresser. A sheet metal worker and loving father to an autistic child. At least two people who took a wrong turn on the same bridge in Detroit. A toddler.

Great breakdown of a very informative #SANS2025 session! Thanks @kyliewoodman.bsky.social !

At the opening remarks of #SANS2025, which are 🔥 on doing science on identity, emotion, community, our brains & wellbeing in the current climate is still necessary and beneficial, even when actively being threatened. @sansmeeting.bsky.social

69M married women could lose their voting rights if the SAVE Act is passed. Transgender individuals too. Why? Absent a valid passport, you must present a birth certificate *with the same name as your registration* to be registered. This is insane! Hands Off Her Vote

This is a big deal. Spread the word. But it’s tiny compared to the totality of what’s happening at NIH. Cure Research for all cancers, Alzheimer’s, everything is being gutted. Intentionally. It’s all getting burned to the ground but the news isn’t getting out. The new cures won’t be there for you.

My parents died from incurable degenerative neurological disorders. Dad from Parkinson's and mom from ALS. One thing that kept me going after they died was the hope that there would one day be better, more affordable treatments. I've run races to raise money for that. This news is hard to see.

There’s a strain of person who would much rather believe that Americans aren’t doing anything to fight back than that they ARE fighting back and it hasn’t fixed things. And look, I get it. It’s the same drive that says if you don’t bounce back from an illness, you must have done something wrong.
