‘…in 1966 … Bell … showed that quantum mechanics could permit hidden variables after all. … However, [Grete] Hermann had reported the very same error in her 1933 paper, and again in her 1935 essay…’ physicsworld.com/a/grete-herm...

Patterns are meant to be generative, not descriptive.

I began buying scientific and technical books around 1968 when I got my first after-school job. 67 years later, most of the basic info in those books is still valid in a way that a 1901 textbook would not have been valid in 1968. It looks in many ways like progress is slowing...

Nothing fails like success.

The best paper I've read in a very long time is David Hestenes's Gyromagnetics of the electron clock. I've reposted it on my company site at www.ahimsasystems.com/2025/03/01/g...

What Erica said but more of it! 😂 Get your damn colonoscopy as early as possible

"Primer" is a time travel film that some fans treat as a puzzle to be solved, even 20 years later. The Sci Fi Film Club digs into the 2004 cult classic about trying to get rich by redefining the laws of physics 🔬 reactormag.com/primer-a-fil...

If Classical Electrodynamics changed your life or marked your psyche, plan now to celebrate the centennial of J. D. Jackson's birth on January 25! #JDJ100

Circles are ellipses. Squares are rectangles.

'Whatever else may be said of hidden-variable theories, it must be admitted that they do what they are supposed to do.' Bryce DeWitt, Physics Today September 1970

I typed my 1983 master's thesis in QM/GR myself on an IBM selectric, including lots of superscripts/subscripts and Greek characters. I love TeX and LaTeX.

The censorship algorithm on Twitter reduced our audience by roughly 95%, and seriously, who does that to a wildlife biology & advocacy group ? So we moved 😇 over here to BlueSky If you could, please help us regain our following Follow Retweet and Repeat ;-) Together we can change the world.

A friend insisted to me that there is no real content to Schrödinger's equation, that it is just a curve fit to experimental data. Uh, no...

It's okay to not have an opinion about something you know nothing about. And if you do have an opinion about something you know nothing about, please do not share it with others (or at least with me!).

Apple's home page today:

I liked having a President who knew what a differential equation is.

Christmas present from my wife this year:

When I was growing up in the 1960s, Andre Norton was the only easily accessible woman science fiction writer in the Louisiana public elementary schools and libraries.

Beginning writers tend to overuse the hook, moving a later scene to the beginning. But if you do use it, make sure to keep your hook consistent with the rest of the story as you revise it. Always insert your hook back into the proper chronology of the story to make sure it stays consistent.

America mourns sharply the loss of President Jimmy Carter. A leader of soaring integrity and passionate devotion to human rights, his legacy already sparkles like a diamond in the rough. With millions of Americans, I send love and gratitude to the Carter family.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos also owns an aerospace company named Blue Origin, and the former bookseller has ideas. Those include housing humans in rotating cylinders around Earth’s orbit and moving all heavy industry into space. It’s not as crazy as it sounds. www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBoc...

'Numbers don't lie' is a lie.

'Follow the money.' A lot of behavior that can seem irrational makes sense if you follow the money and understand how a person benefits financially if the position they advocate for is adopted.

Some companies want people to work together as a team but they still follow the old Jack Welch ranking system with fixed percentages for employee ranking ('rank and yank'). In such a system, it is not enough for you to succeed, your teammates must fail.

Happy 84th birthday to Anthony Fauci

To those who believe science is culturally neutral: Even if the equations are the same, the interpretation matters.

'Linear algebra' and 'matrix algebra' are not synonymous. A matrix representation of a linear algebra adds extraneous structure, masks the inherent structure, and may not be a computationally efficient representation. #Quaternion #GeometricAlgebra

Cross product considered harmful. You can't define a cross product in 2 dimensions. You can't define a cross product in 4 dimensions. Why do we keep teaching something that can't be done in plane geometry or in relativity, when there is a simple alternative? Use the wedge, Luke.

"...interpretations of quantum mechanics that place great significance in the need for complex numbers are wide off the mark.” Excerpt From Geometric Algebra for Physicists Chris Doran & Anthony Lasenby books.apple.com/us/book/geom... This material may be protected by copyright.

I realize I am being manipulated, but on mornings like today I really needed #ChatCPT to tell me 'That’s a fantastic counterpoint to bring up!', 'Here’s why your argument is spot-on', and 'Your argument is exactly the kind of response that could leave someone reflecting on their oversimplification'

I keep seeing people quote 'Frank Herbert' when they are really quoting from his fictional Orange Catholic Bible or characters from his Dune series. A recent quote was really a quote from Princess Irulan quoting her father, Emperor Shaddam IV, not exactly a character to take moral advice from.

Configuration is code.

Your periodic reminder as we go into the holiday season that the only safe amount of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 is zero. Quality masks work to prevent the spread of airborne illness, yet everyone up to and including medical professionals wearing them daily for decades somehow forgot this?

'Cowards die many times before their deaths; The valiant never taste of death but once.'

A continuing problem in modeling languages like #UML or #SysML2 is that they don't allow for the fact that attributes can be functions. An example would be the density of a solid object, which is a function of position. Example: In #astrodynamics, to model the density of the atmosphere. #mbse

Decided to go old-school and implement the # SysML2 textual notation using #lex / #yacc/ #c (well, flex/bison/c). A couple of points: (1) This stuff is small and fast and simple. (2) I cannot understand why object-oriented languages haven't incorporated relationships as 1st-class objects yet. #mbse

New Year's resolution - finally finish shifting to #emacs instead of #vi, not just when I am editing #Lisp.

Fundamental progress seems to have greatly slowed over the last 60 years. Most of my scientific books with 1968 or later copyright on them are still relevant in a way that a book with a 1908 copyright would not have been valid in 1968.
