Some reading on chimpanzees for a bit of happiness… Harrison Ostridge, Mimi Arandjelovic and I wrote a piece for @africa.theconversation.com on local genetic adaptation to different habitats (deep forest, woodland-savannah) in wild populations of chimps. theconversation.com/chimpanzee-g...

Please consider nominating deserving colleagues (including yourselves) who would be excellent candidates for five open positions on the Council, including Nominations for President-elect, Secretary, Treasurer, and 2 Councilors. Please share widely! @official-smbe.bsky.social

Interested in a project in the intersection of ancient DNA and Deep Learning for characterizing genetic variation? Do send a DM. Thank your for your RT!

Excellent popgen course!

Check out our new preprint describing CiFi - a method that couples 3C and PacBio HiFi sequencing with low input requirements. We apply it to human GM12878 to better characterize chromatin across repetitive regions, as well as single insect samples (a mosquito and a Mediterranean fruit fly).

It’s not all doom and gloom! We show in @nature.com that genetic diversity is in decline, but in @theconversation.com we dive into five strategies to help maintain or restore biodiversity @robynshaw.bsky.social @katefarquharson.bsky.social theconversation.com/gene-pools-a... 🧪🌍🦤🧬 #consgen #popgen

Out now in @nature.com! Our comprehensive meta-analysis of global terrestrial and marine genetic diversity demonstrates rapid loss of genetic diversity and identifies conservation interventions that could mitigate this process www.nature.com/articles/s41... 🧪🌍🦤🧬 #consgen #PopGen

With some delay... but some good news. The final version of our paper Local Genetic Adaptation to Habitat in Wild Chimpanzees is out in Science. Great PanAfrican (PanAf) collaboration led by PhD student (now Dr!) Harrison Ostridge. 🧪#PopGen #evobio www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

If you have been affected by the fires in LA, or are concerned about your ability to keep precious Drosophila strains going during the latest funding crisis, we will host your strains as a backup. Please email me. Please amplify. If you are also able to host fly strains, add your name as well.

Thrilled to have been a part of this study led by @aidaandres.bsky.social that finds evidence of genetic adaptation in chimpanzees to different habitats. Most notably signatures of positive selection in chimpanzees underlie resistance to malaria in humans (GYPA and HBB).
