As usual, Fred’s essay here is excellent and worth the time

Looks like there's a fair amount of development that would still need to happen, but upstreaming Lustre would be pretty cool

Thread worth reading

Really good episode with some technical depth. @bcantrill.bsky.social said something insightful about debugging and automation that I’m going to steal: “You have to get the human into the loop before you can get them out of it.”

Tag me “control plane in blast radius” Those have been some of my “favorite” outages over the years…

Blacksky’s development continues to be so cool, it’s awesome to follow

The thread is on CA’s challenge to the national guard deployment, and the whole thread is good. But this line is *excellent*

I think I poked around IRC a bit earlier, but my first really active “social media” was on webcomic phpBB forums.

God, that first season of Heroes had so much potential

This was my home farmers market back in 2018, and it was already well on its way to this 😁

I've spent a lot of time helping colleagues lately with writing presentations for different audiences, and wrote up a short blog post on how important it is to tailor format and content to the audience. thinking.ajdecon.org/2025/06/09/c...

I'm inclined for a number of reasons to reject criticisms of GenAI as a concept, but I cannot understand why Google is pushing the AI search result feature. It doesn't work well, because search queries aren't written like good prompts, so it shows off their product at its worst

Visiting Seattle in the summer is a trap

Matching up to 2,500 USD to Immigrant Defenders Law Center, for the first people to DM or reply with receipts. They're EIN 47-4473312 for quickly looking up if you have a DAF.

kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

not sure there's a more embarrassing profession than ICE agent. Oh, you dress like a soldier to abduct sous chefs and throw flashbangs at protesters? Get a real job you loser

As someone who’s enjoyed a bunch of IP tie-in novels, this is an absolutely fascinating thread.

Sometimes I wonder how much anger at AI has been driven by Google sticking an absolutely horrible implementation right at the top of every search page

This is a good table, and worth noting for scale that 1 minute of a low-flow showerhead is >2x the biggest value. 🚿 AI datacenter power and water usage is *absolutely* an issue, but mostly at a local level rather than a global one. E.g. probably they shouldn’t go in already water-poor areas.

Some of y'all cant handle 2 high agency males going at it and it really shows

It does suck that "AI" now means both generative AI (boo hiss) and a whole basket of incredibly useful machine learning techniques.

Thank you @charity.wtf for the absolutely INCREDIBLE sticker shipment! So many amazing designs and I know just where some of these will go…

Your key takeaway from the brilliant Ukraine attack with small drones into Russia shouldn’t be “wow, small drones make it so easy to score huge hits,” it should be “wow, Ukrainians are insanely good at covertly planning and executing extraordinarily difficult missions of which drones are one part”.

This no-kill animal shelter is in desperate need of kitten food, kitten milk replacement, and other supplies. If you post a screenshot in my replies showing that you donated at least $10 (even as a Chewy gift card), I'll answer a style-related question for you. Donation info in their thread.

Excellent thread

This is why "you're right, it isn't what you voted for, because your values aren't shared by the Republican Party" is a much more effective message to help build a better America than "yes you did vote for this, you bad person" which fails to take advantage of this once-in-a-generation opportunity

Fireside this week, discussing the US system of officer training, with a focus on 'PME' (Professional Military Education) in the staff and war colleges. It's an important ecosystem for training America's military leaders, but not one the public thinks much about. acoup.blog/2025/05/30/f...

All of the members of the Fellowship are valid masculine role models of one model or another. Yes, even Boromir. Yes, and even Pippin.

tolkien masculinity is also right there. loyalty, duty to your friends, partner, and world. fellowship, grace. physically and emotionally affectionate with friends. following the King's banner down the center with the fellas as Grimbold takes his company right after passing the wall, stuff like that

“When thousands of Palestinian civilians are currently being bombed and starved every day, it just isn’t the right time to be humanizing and amplifying their pleas to not be deliberately murdered. The right time is after even more have died—like way, way afterward."

I continue to wish for a “Journal of Production Computing” that only publishes papers on systems* that have been in production use for over a year. * “Systems” defined very broadly — software, hardware, team management, etc. The important part is “production use” and for a long duration.
