This talk was just 10 minutes. I wish it was 2 hours or more #Outlier2025 📊 #DataViz

Next up at #outlier2025, Zan Armstrong introduces diagnostic charts - the middle ground of really useful charts beyond simple “explore” or “explain” charts - some fascinating science-inspired examples!

No offence to everyone else here at #outlier2025 but a talk by @datarevelations.com is basically the highlight of any conference - worth the entry fee alone! Here he tells us the importance of Seeing Data through your Audience’s Eyes

Thankfully @amycesal.com, Max Graze, Alan Wilson and @policyviz.bsky.social managed to get their fifteen style guide tips into one summary slide at #outlier2025 so I didn’t have to pick one!

It’s the chART virtual book launch at #outlier2025 - here’s @nadiehbremer.com and @juliebrunet.bsky.social appearing remotely, with @zanewolf.bsky.social proudly displaying the real book! Can’t wait to get hold of my copy (frustratingly 3000 miles away from me at home right now!)

Excited to speak soon at #Outlier2025

Outlier, the annual dataviz conference of the @datavizsociety.bsky.social, has just started today and will run until Friday. 📊 If you're posting from the conference, please tag your posts with #outlier2025 so that we can follow! 👀

The next panel discussion at #outlier2025 comes with its own “create your own dataviz” 🤔

Want to follow along with #Outlier2025 this year? Use the hashtag to help others find your posts and connect on the great content. I'm attending virtually this year (and will need to miss today because of prior travel) but I'm so excited to see how we're "reimagining" the field of 📊

I am not at #Outlier2025 but I am sure there are many perspectives shared that I also care deeply about and I also want to point out that tomorrow I'll be giving insight into my personal thoughts on #dataviz at the Data+Women online data art episode 3. usergroups.tableau.com/events/detai...

Marco's work (@mhernandez.bsky.social) is mind-blowing #Outlier2025 #dataViz 📊

"Why start a company? Because one person cannot be good at ALL the things. Perhaps you can DO them all but it's unlikely you'll WOW at them." Gurman Bhatia, #outlier2025

Next at #outlier2025 is @chartwaali.bsky.social with her learnings about collaboration and setting up a successful (multi IIB award-nominated) company

Follow the #Outlier2025 hashtag for updates about the Outlier conference 📊 #dataviz (from today to Friday!)

Love how Elizabeth Palmer Peabody “wanted her audience to stop and reflect” - from @laurenfklein.bsky.social’s introductory keynote featuring #DataXDesign at #outlier2025

Love these ethical perspectives from Lauren Klein and Tanvi Sharma at #outlier2025. - who designed the Viz, and who for? - probe missing data - do you need to Viz at all?

what i like about this post is it is an illustration of one of the most distinctive qualities of williams' work and mainstream punditry in general, which is a belief that history began a decade ago

That seems to be the goal

On Friday I'm giving the keynote at the Outlier conference www.outlierconf.com It's a completely new talk, so I still have a lot to work on. Here's one of they key slides 📊 #dataViz

Adding to this thread, I've always found it hilarious that Miami right wingers who have gigantic Cuban flags in front of their houses freak out when seeing a Mexican flag

This list is like the Avengers for people who only read airport books called something like "Leading Leadership for Leaders"

Assign students to ask class-related questions and grade them on the quality/depth of those questions. Provide the feedback and use the questions to help shape what you do in the classroom. Hard to scale above 35-40 students, but has been super helpful to me.

Good post that generates discussions on student's use of LLMs. If you're a teacher, have a look!

Next week I'm giving a keynote at Outlier www.outlierconf.com and I'm going to showcase the work of many independent journalists and activists who are teaching themselves #dataViz 📊 to produce important work. Example:

The promise is AI/LLM is that it will make things easier, but every time I read about how it actually works, it's just a different kind of difficult.

The people trying to make things better -- more fair, more humane -- should feel terrible about themselves for being out of touch & condescending. Openly venal, selfish assholes who delight in cruelty to others must be treated with kid gloves, not judged too quickly or harshly, gently welcomed.

Maybe the problem is a two-year old tech is not a thing to embed in the middle of a mature and both time and accuracy-sensitive business? edition.cnn.com/2025/05/28/m...

#Outlier2025 will be a place to think about yourself, your audience, and the different ways in which we take in information. Meet Rebecca Lamm, a Senior Data Visualization & UX Designer at Graphicacy, who shares insights from attending Outlier. Register here: www.outlierconf.com/outlier-2025...
