My hot take before I drift off to bed: Nobody likes it when their favorite character dies, even when they death is well-earned and executed. Killing characters in fiction, while often part of storytelling, is the least interesting thing that can be done with any character.

Self-publishing is perfectly valid. But it doesn’t really sidestep any of the problems of trying to do this job. It just puts all those problems on the author. Trad pub isn’t doing great on that front either, but when it works, it is a lot less difficult on the author.
