Queen, 1980-09-19 Rosemont Horizon, Chicago, IL, USA. A good recording, and a good performance. Worth a listen. At the end of 'You're My Best Friend' Freddy invites opinions: "Do you think I should keep this moustache? ... Did you say no? - Fuck off!"

Fats Waller, 1938-10-14 The Yacht Club, New York, NY, USA. Great music, sounds like the joint was jumping. Fats Waller often says hello! Like he's answering the telephone. Witty dialogue with announcer who likes saying 'apropos'. Fun.

The Teen Idles, 1980-07-27 Third Dimension, Washington, DC, USA. Rough but fascinating recording featuring every song in future discography and a few covers. A week before trip to California and a month before recording the Minor Disturbance EP - Dischord 001.

Duke Ellington, 1940-11-07 Crystal Ballroom, Fargo City Auditorium, Fargo, ND, USA. An amazing 2h 34m live recording of Duke Ellington's orchestra playing at a ballroom, made using a portable turntable that recorded onto acetate-covered auminium discs.

Grateful Dead, 1980-08-26 Cleveland Public Auditorium, Cleveland, OH, USA. Starts off strong with an unusual rendition of Sugaree. A generous helping of spine-tingling, foot-tapping goodness. www.archive.org/details/gd80...

Bruce Cockburn, 1980-05-13 My Father's Place, Roslyn, NY, USA. Quality recording for radio broadcast of an entertaining set of songs with 2 instrumentals, some banter and audience participation.

Grateful Dead, 1980-08-16 Mississippi River Festival, Edwardsville, IL, USA. Very nice audience recording of a solid performance at an outdoor festival. It started raining heavily during 'Ship of Fools' - you can hear the raindrops - but the band kept playing.

Glenn Miller, 1940-10-18 Café Rouge, Hotel Pennsylvania, New York, NY, USA. Includes 'Pennsylvania 6-5000', named after the phone number of the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York, which was the venue of this and many other big band concerts. Worth a listen if only for that.

The Grateful Dead, 1968-03-30 Carousel Ballroom, San Francisco, CA, USA. A fascinating audience recording featuring an early performance of China Cat Sunflower.

The Beatles, 1965-08-01 ABC Theatre, Blackpool, England. This recording is from the 'Blackpool Night Out' live TV broadcast, very good sound quality, some screaming between songs. Six well-known songs including the first live performance of 'Yesterday'.

Bright Eyes, 2003-07-30 Abbey Pub, Chicago, IL, USA. A very good recording that starts with a short poem, ends with a quiet song, and in between features a diverse set of songs, banter, and some heckling. Fine renditions of 'Bowl of Oranges' and 'Road to Joy'.

Great Lake Swimmers, 2006-04-18 The Mill, Iowa City, IA, USA. Lovely clear sound. Mostly acoustic songs, folky, melancholy and yet somehow uplifting. Banter includes: "We're going to have a good time tonight, if your idea of a good time is sadness".

The Beach Boys, 1967-11-17 Masonic Temple Theatre, Detroit, MI, USA. Excellent recording of a fun show featuring 4 songs from the forthcoming album Wild Honey, Good Vibrations from Smiley Smile, a few older hits, 2 covers, and plenty of banter.

Benny Goodman, 1937-11-20 Madhattan Room, Hotel Pennsylvania, New York, NY, USA. Lively and fun listening. Gene Krupa's drum solo gets applause. Swinging rendition of Limehouse Blues featuring a great vibraphone solo by Lional Hampton.

Various Artists, 1901-03-13/15/19/29, Metropolitan Opera, New York, NY, USA. Live recordings of opera performances made on wax cylinders by Lionel Mapleson. Perhaps the oldest surviving live recordings. Fascinating!

Fugazi, 2001-04-06 Ogden Theatre, Denver, CO, USA. Twenty four years ago today. A high quality audience recording, all the instruments come across clearly and it is fun listening. More crowd noise in the mix compared to the Fugazi Live Series version.
