Received invite from the @royalsociety.org for an invite-only meeting on the Future of Scientific Publishing. Will turn it down because of RSC's failure to revoke Musk's membership. I hope my colleagues do the same. Who should I cc on my rejection to send a stronger message, @scurry.bsky.social ?

Fascinating, as this appears to mean that Republicans were pro open data before open science was even a thing?! I certainly didn't hear about open (notebook) science until around 2006 when Jean-Claude Bradley, a chemist, coined the term, only 19 years ago. And I was one of the early ones.

Complementing other communications about the "Restoring Gold Standard Science" Executive Order, here is a statement from COS. Also, see the links to stories from previous attempts to co-opt open science for policies that undermine science and evidence-based policymaking. www.cos.io/about/news/c...

Indeed. There is a curious reluctance to call out scurrilous behavior in science even when there seems to be no chance that there's been a misunderstanding.

"He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them. But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side, if he does not so much as know what they are,

It's very depressing that test scores are declining and English majors can't understand Dickens. But those are averages; maybe the upper echelon is not declining because truly nerdy kids have so many more free edu resources now (including LLMs) that their scores are actually increasing?

Bluesky's user base has had this pattern since its inception - a huge influx of users triggered by an external event, which then decays over time until the next influx. - There has almost never been a time when bsky's user count wasn't falling - Bsky's 'base' is bigger than it ever has been

We've been asked what the most important thing we can do to improve research culture. My answer, the only answer, is to withdraw immediately from university rankings. bsky.app/profile/stat...

This is really disappointing to hear. I really enjoy Ethan's posts and perspective on AI.

Researchers involved in large collaborations, how do you work out how much each person has contributed to a manuscript, through many rounds of Google Doc editing? I thought that DocuViz, the Google Chrome extension, would be the answer.

"GBH News could not find any other examples of the Harvard Corporation stripping a tenured professor of their status." Yes, because in other fraud cases I'm familiar with, the professors eventually resigned "voluntarily", sometimes after negotiations may have led to a golden parachute.

when trump and co say they're seizing control of research because of the reproducibility crisis, it's pretty similar to when they say they're enacting trans bathroom bans and sports bans because of violence and discrimination against women.

Cool! Wait. Cosmic rays are visible?

English majors can't read. Only around 5% of them at 2 regional Kansas universities could comprehend the long sentences of Dickens, with his complex and somewhat archaic vocabulary, which requires recognizing what is figurative language and what is literal. open.substack.com/pub/kittenbe...
