Keir Starmer says he wants to make more pensioners eligible for the winter fuel payment this year - and did not rule out an announcement next week www.mirror.co.uk/news/politic...

Trump is back in the headlines, with some more tariff news - though this time they might be ending. Except he's also added more. It really is chaos - but only time will tell what will happen next.

This is really interesting, and shows how Reform is getting votes from pretty much anywhere. A big challenge for them, though, will be getting people who didn’t vote last year to vote in 2029.

Farage wants Reform to start accepting crypto donations. That is not good. Cryptocurrencies have their perks, but they should not be used for political donations. They are much harder to trace, which means we don’t know who is donating what. That could allow anyone to bypass all current rules.

An American court has ordered Trump to end his tariffs. This doesn’t include all tariffs, but does include all from ‘liberation day’, plus others. The court gave Trump 10 days to reverse his tariffs, but he’s appealing the decision - so don’t expect to see them go anytime soon.

Housing Secretary Angela Rayner wants to increase house building, by relaxing the planning permission process. Councillors won’t be involved with ‘small projects’. Medium projects will face reduced biodiversity rules. This means less protections for wildlife. That’s not good for anybody.

Thames Water has been fined £122.7 million following two investigations which found breaches of rules in its wastewater operations and relating to dividend payments. Ben Boulos explains on #BBCBreakfast it's the largest penalty ever issued by the water regulator

Here’s an interesting one… Farage has challenged Starmer to a debate in a pub. Not sure that’s the best setting. Farage is also claiming that Reform is the “party of the workers”, but I’m not sure how workers would pay for private healthcare under Reform… 🤔

There’s apparently been some talk about removing the two child cap on benefits. A minister has said that they’re “considering” it. Even the Prime Minister is thought to support scrapping it, and has asked the Treasury to find the money needed.

Theresa May, of all people, has proposed that NHS staff should be able to detain those in a mental health crisis, without the police. Said NHS staff have described it as “dangerous”, for obvious reasons.

Consider this your reminder to fact-check what you see online.

This has been a very eventful week. Of course, there was that ‘Brexit reset’ on Monday… lots to unpack there. I’d say it was good overall though, and I am hopeful that we can see more progress made on the areas which don’t yet have a deal. #UKPolitics #EU #Brexit #BrexitReset #KeirStarmer

There already isn't enough support for many children in schools. There desperately needs to be a shift from the idea of "diagnosis led support" to "needs led support". Further reducing support will leave many more struggling. 1/ www.theguardian.com/education/20...

Is it me, or is there no real discoverability on Bluesky? Feels like the main flaw of this platform.

Am I the only one who thinks Starmer's new immigration approach is a little odd? When people talk about immigration, they're generally talking about illegal, rather than legal, immigration. But Starmer is worried about the skilled people coming here to work. #UKPolitics #KeirStarmer #Immigration

The Telegraph being optimistic as always. There is one, very simple, reason that the NHS is crumbling. A lack of investment.

Multiple governments have struggled to get a trade deal post-Brexit, but Starmer just got two in one week! What I find more interesting though, is the lack of competence already being shown by Reform mayors, despite only being elected last week. #UKPolitics #KeirStarmer #DonaldTrump #ReformUK

Starmer doesn’t seem to understand that people who vote Reform are not left wing people. They’re not going to vote Labour. The only problem he actually has is losing votes to the Lib Dems and Greens, who are now the only ones actually representing the left.

Local elections were just a few days ago! I think we all knew Reform would do well, but I certainly didn’t expect them to do quite so well. 10 councils, 2 mayors, and another MP. It really was a good day for Farage, although I’m sure voters will regret it. #UKPolitics #NigelFarage #KeirStarmer

Britain and EU expected to make formal trade deal.

Putin has announced a 3 day ceasefire starting on 8th May.

Thankfully, this week has been less eventful than the past few. However, plenty’s still happened. Most notably for me, Starmer seems to have completely turned his back on trans people, despite supporting them only a few years ago. #Politics #UKPolitics #KeirStarmer #TransRights #TradeDeal
