It wasn't until I edited this photo that I appreciated how finely carved the weepers were on the side of the chest tomb of Thomas Beauchamp [pronounced Bee-cham], 11th Earl of Warwick, at St Mary's Church, #Warwick. Need to return to photograph them all individually! #churchmonuments

#otd 22 June 1483 Ralph Shaa preached at St Paul's Cross that the children of King Edward IV were illegitimate, and that his brother should be King Richard III. #Stonehenge gets all the attention at #Solstice unsurprisingly. There may, however, be an alignment at #Avebury. #otd 21st June 1585 Henry Percy 8th Earl of Northumberland committed suicide at Tower of London. He was found dead in his bed in his cell, having been shot through the heart. A jury was at once summoned, and returned a verdict of suicide. He was buried in St Peter ad Vincula Church, Tower of London.

On 21st June 1377 King Edward III of England (age 64) died of a stroke at Sheen Palace. He was buried in the Chapel of St Edward the Confessor, Westminster Abbey. His grandson King Richard II (age 10) succeeded.

It was the anniversary of the death of #Derbyshire antiquary Llewelyn Jewitt recently so I took myself off to Winster Church to see if I could find his grave. After some tea and cake, and some digging [not literally!], I found it, with wife Elizabeth, and their two sons. Nice Burne-Jones window too.

Monument in the Grey Mausoleum at Flitton to Anthony Grey, 3rd Baron Lucas, eldest son of Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Kent, who died aged thirty-eight by choking on an ear of barley, the beard of which stuck in his throat. He was one of seven of Henry's children who predeceased him. #churchmonuments

#OTD 19th June 1566 #King James I and VI was born to "Lord Darnley" and Mary Queen of Scots at #Edinburgh Castle. His father was murdered eight months later. He mother married #Bothwell, who was implicated in his father's murder. He last saw his mother in June 1567. allabouthistory.co.uk/xue6k9Rp

19th June 1312 Piers Gaveston, aged 28, was beheaded at Blacklow Hill near Warwick on the orders of Guy Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick. Gaveston's crime was to have been a 'favourite' of King Edward II, who [Edward] "took great delight in the vice of sodomy and had an excessive affection for Gaveston".

On 18th June 1828 sculptor Henry Hugh Armstead was born in Bloomsbury. He trained first under his father, then at the Government School of Design at Somerset House and afterwards at private art schools. He also studied with Edward Hodges Baily.

18th June 1528 Anne Boleyn catches the Sweating Sickness and returns to Hever Castle. King Henry “in great haste, dislodged, and went 12 miles hence”. She survived. Her sister Mary’s husband did not dying two weeks later.

On 18th June 1525 Henry Fitzroy, age 6, illegitimate son of King Henry VIII and Elizabeth Blount, was taken by barge to Bridewell Palace where he was enobled by his father who made him Earl of Nottingham and Duke of Richmond and Somerset. #tudor #history
