Too economist to be a historian. Too historian to be an economist. My expressed ideas here are usually the slaves of some defunct economist, and my employer is alive and not an economist. Missing home, wherever that is.

If you want an example of the failings of Community Notes, look no further than Musk spreading misinfo in the hours after the Minnesota shooting. The shooter has now been IDed as a Trump supporter. There is no community note on Musk or the original post he quotes.

The circumstances of Salt Lake City’s killing during the No Kings march remain too weird. The highlighted passage is something I’ll never understand and will always deeply frighten me.

Every time I get on this website I have to take 5 minutes to figure out if the world is literally about to end or if it's just Bluesky being Bluesky.

I wrote about how the 2020 protests hurt Trump politically. I also wrote about how counternarratives about left-wing violence are just spin — and wildly at odds with the reality of extremist violence. Gift link: wapo.st/3SOEv6e

Tonight, I introduced legislation to stop Trump from from leading us into an illegal war with Iran. Another war in the Middle East could cost countless lives, waste trillions more dollars, and lead to even more deaths, more conflict, and more displacement.

Female academics are much more affected by the birth of a child than are male academics. Academic mothers are much more likely to... ◾temporarily leave the labor force ◾and, if they return, shift away from tenure-track positions. scholar.harvard.edu/files/sdchen...

I wrote a new piece on how much progress has been made in treating childhood leukemia. The answer is: quite a lot! Before the 1970s, fewer than 10% of children diagnosed survived 5 years after diagnosis. Now most are cured and around 85% survive that long. ourworldindata.org/childhood-le...

Learning takes time (and must take time). The 2 hours are critical for thinking carefully about the problem, considering it from multiple perspectives, finding more interesting works and authors on the topic, and developing a solid understanding that will lead to more ideas and insights later on.

Possible to start to tell a unified story: "Trump is personally too old, crazy, and confused to run things, so at any given time the question is which co-president is in charge. At first it was Musk, & we got the crazy chaotic DOGE era. Then Navarro: a trade war that crashed markets. Now Miller..."

Get yourself to a protest this Saturday. Spread the word. Shit has escalated significantly in just a handful of days and we need to get out there and show big, collective anger about it. Don't break shit or start fights, just show up in numbers. www.nokings.org#map

Where did it all go wrong? It started wrong. That’s the natural state. What we have to appreciate is how hard people had to work to make it right, in the brief periods when it was.

What happened when the U.S. forcibly sent 400,000 Mexican workers back to Mexico in the 1930s? The employment rate of native workers *went down* noticeably as a direct result. (You read that correctly) Why? Forced repatriation destroyed low-skill markets. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

After 10 years of doing research in Historical Political Economy, this fall I’ll finally get a chance to teach a survey course on the field & I’m really looking forward to it! 😊 I thought this would be an opportunity to create a syllabus with many essential contributions to this growing field.
