We ( @zeniabaek.bsky.social @moicoll.bsky.social and @asgerhobolth.bsky.social ) present a new cool way to visualize the optimal trade off for hmm decoding called Artemis plots! arxiv.org/pdf/2504.15156 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

@amygoldberg.bsky.social exploring arcgaeological & genetic estimates of population size / growth during the Holocene in the context of the #Neolithic demografic transition. #HumanEvo25

I wrote about how we must stand and fight against the threat of eugenics. Fueled by white nationalism and scientific racism, these beliefs are factually wrong and ethically abhorrent. This fight includes supporting efforts to diversify our workforce & science. To stop now would be a deep betrayal.

I’ll be in LA at the end of the year for a few weeks preparing for the move. Message me if you’re around!

The Goldberg lab is moving to UCLA Human Genetics summer 2025! Excited for new opportunities and collaborations. We will be recruiting at all levels to work on the evolutionary and population genetics of humans, our primate relatives, and the malaria parasites we share.

New preprint led by lab postdoc Dashiell Massey! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... What do we mean when we say assortative mating? We use simulations to link mechanistic mate-choice models to observed correlations in ancestry between spouses in admixed populations (with some surprises)

Two new chapters from my open-access textbook in human population genetics are now online: - Population structure: I. Ancestry estimation - Population structure: II. More about admixture web.stanford.edu/group/pritch...

The UCLA Goodman-Luskin Endowed Postdoctoral Fellowship in Microbiome Research ($100K in salary + supplies) deadline is June 1. Get in touch if you would like to write a proposal together! And, get in touch even if your timeline is different - I am looking for a postdoc!

New edited volume on Speciation, organized by Katie Peichel and colleagues, coming soon from Cold Springs Harbor Press

New lab preprint by John McAuley et al: the genetic architecture of recombination rates is sexually-dimorphic and polygenic in wild house sparrows. What have we found…? A 🧵👇https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2023.01.26.525019v2

I am so excited to share the advance online version of our new paper "Do genetic loci that cause reproductive isolation in the lab inhibit gene flow in nature?" Bret and I really enjoyed thinking about these ideas and we hope others find the discussion useful! academic.oup.com/evolut/advan...

Happy to share some new work with @samurscicop.bsky.social and Daniel Matute on the history of Aedes aegypti in the Americas and what it means for genomic diversity and the efficacy of selection 🦟

Upsetting to hear that Duke is dismantling its exceptional herbarium—a huge collection of plant specimens and related resources. Here's a recent article about its need for more space and staff—and its uncertain future, despite a 2023 university report calling it a "unique and irreplaceable resource"

sad news - Duke University decided to dump their herbarium, which has over 800,000 plant specimens, one of the largest among in America, and includes many type specimens of Lady Gaga ferns. What a shame. Please stop Duke admins for making this horrible mistake!!

Are you a theoretician in ecology/evolution/systematics & related fields? Do you hope to become one? Wondering where there is a good community to share tips, learn new tricks, & hear about modelling discoveries? Check out the Society for Modeling & Theory in Population Biology (SMTPB)! smtpb.org

The origins of maize were the subject of controversy for well over a century. Even in the 1950's botanists like Edgar Anderson weren't totally sure what continent it came from! We published today a new model for maize origins (www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...). Let me tell you how we got here. 1/
