I was quoted in this @thenewarab.bsky.social article on the presence of foreign fighters, especially Uyghurs, in the Syrian army, and China’s approach to them @cais-exeter.bsky.social www.newarab.com/analysis/reb...

It’s in the hands of the gods now…

I’ll be in Shanghai for 1-2 months! If you are around, let me know!

Light at the end of the tunnel!

Well done, Ethan.

Miriam Verzellino and I have written a short piece on the reaction of Chinese commentators to the recent protests in Turkey and how their perception of Turkish politics has changed over the past few years. chinamed.substack.com/p/turkiyes-p...

For years we've heard from US fossil fuel fans that there is no reason for the US to reduce emissions because, "What about China?" Now that China is reducing emissions I expect we will hear the same people say the US doesn't need to reduce emissions because: China is doing it for us!

Looking forward to this timely [email protected] event on China, the Middle East and Trump 2.0! Enrico Fardella, Eric Olander and I will talk with Zhang Chuchu (Fudan University) and Grant Rumley (The Washington Institute For Near East Policy) Register: shorturl.at/6U7y1

Anyone in Tokyo at the end of the months? I will be there for a conference at Waseda. Ping me!

You were elected to be a center left government, fucking be one.

This isn't hypothetical. The coming days are bringing higher prices and disrupted supply chains, this time not because of a pandemic or a war, but self-inflicted by our country's government under this president.

So in both Australia and Canada, the centre left government has had major electoral success by governing as a centre left government opposed to populism and Trumpism...When will the UK goverment take note?

Happy to share my thoughts on the ongoing US-China trade war in this @anadoluajansicom.bsky.social article @cais-exeter.bsky.social @exeter.ac.uk www.aa.com.tr/en/americas/...

This year we’re adding an exciting new MA in Diplomacy and Foreign Policy to our suite of IR programmes at Exeter. It will be led by the amazing @andreaghiselli.bsky.social and supported by an imminent new hire! Check out our MAs in IR, Security Studies, and Conflict and Development too!

Although I don’t work there anymore, this is a nice gift to celebrate Fudan’s 120th anniversary!

Happy to join many respected colleagues with my comments on the recent joint Sino-Egyptian exercise in this article of the South China Morning Post @cais-exeter.bsky.social @exeter.ac.uk amp.scmp.com/news/china/m...

R&R!

A short article of mine on civil-military relations and democratic backsliding had been accepted for publication in the journal "Connections". Then I received an email that the editors can't publish the paper unless I "remove the case study/examples of the United States" (1/x) #CivMilSky

Two Japanese warships dock at Cambodia’s Chinese-renovated Ream Naval Base – AFP: ‘the first vessels to dock at the site that has raised concerns in Washington.’

Corruption is the most important story in the world, part 212. --Attacking kleptocracy has not, to date, been a very effective political strategy in the US. But that may possibly be changing. "The tariffs were a Trump insider trading scam" cuts through the noise.

I am half way through the research essays written by the BA students of my Chinese foreign policy module. In general, I think I am quite a strict marker but the students are making it difficult! Truly a lot of excellent essays.

The exclusion covers more than $300 billion worth of trade, including $100 billion from China, about a quarter of Chinese imports. It's a huge change and the put it out late on a Friday night with no press release

It didn’t even last a week and the tariffs against China are beginning to crumble with smartphones, PCs, servers, and other tech products being exempted. Sucks for the small business owners who aren’t big enough to lobby for their own exemptions. Welcome to the coin operated presidency.
