Those costs were probably not considered in previous economic studies of climate change impacts and damages.

Last October, ProPublica and @documented.net published secret recordings of Project 2025 architect Russell Vought discussing plans to eviscerate entire agencies and decimate the morale of federal workers if Trump won a second term. "We want the bureaucrats to be traumatically affected," he said.

Thankful to my friend & colleague Victor Vescovo for his important statement on #DeepSeaMining in light of all the recent attention, including US efforts to pursue it outside of international law. In short, DSM will NOT achieve the economic or national security goals people think it will!!! 🌊 🦑

NSF director resigns amid threat to cut NSF budget by 55%. This would be catastrophic for science in the US. www.science.org/content/arti...

We've updated Drilled's guide to global climate disinformation: drilled.media/news/disinfo... Let me know what we're missing!

🧵 THREAD: A federal whistleblower just dropped one of the most disturbing cybersecurity disclosures I’ve ever read. He's saying DOGE came in, data went out, and Russians started attempting logins with new valid DOGE passwords Media's coverage wasn't detailed enough so I dug into his testimony:

My first update of 2025 for changes in land ice mass observed by GRACE(-FO) satellite in Antarctica (left) and Greenland (right)... contributing to global sea level rise + Methods can be found at climate.nasa.gov/vital-signs/... + My visualization can also be downloaded zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-i...

My latest for @eos.org about a global comparison of mass change of mountain glaciers #GlaMBIE, which shows that the ice we lose each year amounts to the water intake of the entire global population in 30 years; with @andyshepherd.bsky.social, @drljv.bsky.social et al

A record increase in the global average atmospheric CO2 in 2024, 3.75 parts per million (previous record was 2.96ppm). The global average is more representative than Mauna Loa, as it is the average of numerous stations located around the world. gml.noaa.gov/ccgg/trends/... 1/

Trump wants to bring back coal—but coal is already on its way out, and for good reason. It’s outdated, dangerous, and deadly: more people have died in US coal mines than all the people from the US who died in Vietnam, the Gulf War, and the Iraq war combined.

This is such an important article, about the simplistic visions now pushing aside scientific research and complex social issues. A must read. newrepublic.com/article/1933...

🚨 March 2025 #Arctic sea ice extent was the lowest on record... This was 1,290,000 km² below the 1981-2010 average. March ice extent is decreasing at about 2.46% per decade. Data: @nsidc.bsky.social (nsidc.org/data/seaice_...)

The notion in Germany. From a local newspaper.

“The official X account of the White House isn’t just full of low-rent 4chan musings, it’s an alarming signal of an administration that’s fluent in internet extremism and seemingly dedicated to pursuing its casual cruelty as a chief political export.”

Have you wondered about cold weather and global warming? Here's a nice article by Science Feedback: science.feedback.org/cold-snaps-d... @sciencefeedback.bsky.social

Shutting down Mauna Loa CO₂ observations while atmospheric CO₂ keeps skyrocketing is like turning off a fire alarm because you don’t like the noise www.nytimes.com/2025/03/14/c...

A new CDC report shows that pedestrian deaths fell across the rich world 2013-2022 -- but not in the USA. Americans were 50% more likely to die walking in 2022 than they would have been in 2013. By 2022, the US was more deadly for pedestrians than all other countries studied.

UK & EU are under attack by the same foes. We must maximise strength by rejoining urgently.

NEW: Nick Enrich, acting asst admin for USAID Global Health, was just placed on administrative admin leave by Trump admin. It comes after he shared a memo with USAID staff, including those on leave/fired saying it’s been impossible to implement Rubio’s waivers for lifesaving aid

NEW: Senator Marshall (R-KS) RUNS AWAY, fleeing his own town hall after being asked about DOGE firing Veterans. MAKE HIM GO VIRAL.

I worry that the focus on NOAA's weather predicting value is ignoring the millions of other ways NOAA researchers enrich communities and local economies. There are no oysters without NOAA. There are no blue crabs without NOAA. NOAA trains teachers. NOAA is the lifeblood of coastal communities.

In the next few days, I will be sharing some of our work that I am most proud of from my time at NOAA/GFDL. But I would also like a little normalcy today on my feed, so here's my go-to sea ice data viz update. #Arctic sea ice extent still remains the *lowest* on record for the date (JAXA). Not good

Repost & like, if you stand with President Zelensky!

I spoke with a hurricane modeler who was just fired from the branch of NOAA that keeps weather models running. He got a form letter like hundreds of others telling him he was losing his job in an hour. This bodes very poorly for American forecasting. Gift link: www.theatlantic.com/science/arch...

We are hiring for a Senior Climate Scientist at @ucsusa.bsky.social. Join us! apply.workable.com/union-of-con...

Thanks for identifying the cost that we all pay to have weather and warnings. With the way this is going, it’s easy to see that in a few years we may all be asked to pay $20+/month to subscribe to such essential services. Expensive because a for profit enterprise, and we all are poorer for it.

Weather, warnings, oceans are public good and must remain so. #saveNOAA

One of the people fired from NOAA today is the director of the Ocean Acidification Program. That program also leads the U.S. government's effort on marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). The destruction of American science is incomprehensible.
