1 year, 6 months and a bit between 9/11 and the invasion of Iraq 1 year, 8 months and a bit between Oct. 7 and now

The terrifying thing about this moment is that anything could happen.

Kimberly Terrell says Tulane silenced her research into racial disparities in Cancer Alley. After months under what she called a “gag order,” she resigned from the university’s environmental law clinic.

An excellent thread on Speaker Melissa Hortman’s extraordinary legacy. Hartman and her husband’s assassination is an unspeakable tragedy. 💔

Always cool stepping onto a 3000-series Metro car and being instantly transported back to 1987.

For @carnegieendowment.org, I wrote about the Saudi podcast scene and how hosts address policy and politics without being overtly "political."

@ DC journalists and activists: Department of the Interior, at the request of MPD, has decided to shut down Dupont Circle from Thursday to Monday.

Forthcoming in June: Poems and Essays from Gaza, Short Stories from Syria As publication dates often slip — and new books surface — we try to have a glance at what’s really coming in translation from Arabic at the start of each month. If you have more books to add, please let us know.

This should not fall to students. Faculty with tenure or tenure lines (& especially those with the privilege of citizenship) should be treating the administrations war on higher ed like the 5-alarm fire it is, and pushing their leadership to do the same. www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

Me and @andrewleber.bsky.social called out our employer in the newspaper for not denouncing these unconstitutional and un-American acts. These students with everything to lose did the same. Why is every tenured faculty member with a guaranteed job for life not doing so as well?

Harvard doesn't need my money, and this is a molecule in the bucket, but they're seemingly one of the few liberal institutions with both resources and the will to push back against this administration at present.

Important paper by Bleemer and Quincy: Since 1960, the college wage premium has become less equal. Lower-income students now get far less out of college than their higher-income peers. www.nber.org/papers/w33797

Trump administration's idea according to NBC: to relocate one million Palestinians to Libya, in exchange for funds for Libya and some incentives for the Palestinians - no words left to describe international politics today

With Pres. Trump in the Middle East for the first major international visit of his second term, questions and controversy swirl around what will come of the trip. @andrewleber.bsky.social, @zaha-hassan.bsky.social, & Amr Hamzawy answer the pressing questions: carnegieendowment.org/emissary/202...

Based on pure anecdata, Trump speech going down v well in the surrounding region (whether you prefer MENA or West Asia, etc.) based on Syria policy changes and the focus on economic activity over conflict.

To understand how Trump views the Arab Gulf monarchies, you could do worse than looking at how the 1976 movie Network talks about "The Arabs" youtu.be/35DSdw7dHjs?...

I've been told repeatedly that tenure is not just for giving sex pests and deadwood guaranteed lifetime employment so now would be a great time for tenured faculty to openly pressure their universities to resist this Maoist evisceration of academia.

This attitude (particularly on the Supreme Court) is why corruption is more or less legal in the United States at present.
