We have wandered very far off of that path.

Thomas Fugate, who has no apparent management or anti-terrorism experience, replaced an Army veteran with more than two decades of national security experience who resigned in March when the administration began cutting his staff. By @hannahallam.bsky.social‬

After an @afp.com investigation, YouTube and TikTok removed 28 pages that were using AI to churn out fabricated sermons delivered in Pope Leo XIV's voice or otherwise attributed to him. Many of the fakes had far more views than any post on the pope's official Instagram. www.rfi.fr/en/internati...

What I'm trying to do with this Daily Brief is write about human rights in ways that we can all understand. It's not intended for experts and activists (although, many of them have told me they like it, too). Have a look at recent editions and tell me what you think: www.hrw.org/daily-brief-...

#Trump administration sanctions four #ICC judges just for doing their jobs. The new sanctions come as Trump is working to undercut rule of law in the US. ICC member countries should make clear they back the court’s independence and critical global mandate. Victims everywhere deserve justice.

Since the talk is about tagging this morning, I thought I'd share this from Brussels some years ago. (No, I wasn't living in a particularly tough neighborhood.)

At the "Red Line for Palestine" event in London this week, HRW spoke to singer and actress Paloma Faith and actor Khalid Abdalla. Action is needed — it is absolutely critical that the UK government take concrete steps to stop Israel's violations of international law.

I am deeply surprised and shocked the two ego-addicted man-babies have fallen out with each other. I did not see that coming at all, and it completely upends my view of everything. Devastated.

"inspired street art has nothing in common with sprayed-on assertions of ‘me, me, me’" Agree 100%. Tagging is just pissing with paint to mark territory. Ugly in form, ugly in intent. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Many times in my Daily Brief, I talk about individuals I’ve never met. Not today. I worked with Joe, and I knew him as a stand-up guy. Arrested by Russian forces, Joe has been imprisoned without trial in the Central African Republic for over a year now. Please share: www.hrw.org/the-day-in-h...

My home town #Cologne is currently evacuating more people than at any time since WW2. Radius of 1km, more than 20,000 people, a hospital, 3 bridges, a train station and plenty of offices. The reason is the defusing of 3 American WW2 bombs.

New @hrw.org research: Airstrikes by the Sudanese Armed Forces using unguided bombs killed and injured scores of civilians, including children, in residential areas of Nyala, South Darfur, in February. Five strikes in 40 minutes on Feb 3 alone. www.hrw.org/preview-link...

When we need medical advice, who should we turn to: a doctor or a politician?  A doctor. That's common sense. Yet when it comes to some medical issues, some attention-seeking politicians try to derail our common-sense thinking. Sensible folks are not fooled... www.hrw.org/the-day-in-h...
