This one is so clearly on the museum. Don't display your priceless chair in a prime seating location unless you want me to take a load off, simple as that. I stand with the man who sat down. www.cbsnews.com/news/tourist...

Gut-wrenching investigation here in which @mattshuham.bsky.social and @jessicaschulberg.bsky.social tell the human stories behind Trump's aggressive deportation campaign — hundreds of detentions without charge, trial or sentencing www.huffpost.com/entry/cecot-...

In some sermons that we reviewed, Vance Boelter can be heard railing against the LGBTQ community and abortion www.wired.com/story/shooti... story with @timmarchman.bsky.social and @leahfeiger.bsky.social

Trump and his allies turned to a familiar script over the weekend, casting the sprawling city of Los Angeles in shades of fire and brimstone, a hub of dangerous lawlessness that required urgent military intervention in order to be contained. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

WSJ Edit Page tonight: “It’s fanciful to think that raiding restaurants to snatch busboys, or Home Depot to grab stock clerks, won’t inspire a backlash. All the more so when ICE acts in heavy-handed fashion” www.wsj.com/opinion/the-...

Guess he was watching tonight

Newsom saying a military force, for which he is the commander in chief, was deployed without his consent. (NG units require a declaration of national emergency or actual threat of rebellion to be federalized.) Newsom says legal action is coming tomorrow.

The city of Glendale, in Los Angeles County, announced today that they're quitting an agreement with ICE thad allowed ICE to house its detainees at the Glendale police department. mynewsla.com/crime/2025/0...

For the folks finger-wagging at protesters about “violence,” a history lesson: The 2020 BLM protests were peaceful, the right cast them as war zones, and Trump sent feds in to attack and disappear protesters. Calls for leftist “peace” confirm a false narrative and justify Trump’s violent response.

This industry loves to wax poetic about free speech and holding truth to power, right up until someone in power gets upset

Maybe I’ll just take a quick peek at the Twitter TL during parental leave— ahhh nope nope nope nope I’m good

Some personal news: I’ve had a baby. Arguably my most ambitious piece of content yet. So I’ll be taking time away from this hell news cycle for a little bit.

My first double byline with Tess! And I couldn’t be happier. Though to be clear, she did the overwhelming majority of the work and deserves the Pulitzer.

Some fed employees have been advised to download their Electronic Official Personnel Folder (eOPF) because they're hearing OPM is planning to cut off access tomorrow. The folder includes all personal identifying info, performance reviews, benefits selections, raises. Unclear why they'd do this.

In all the bleakness, one promising sign: Trump's education EOs show he and his Project 2025 goons don't know who they're dealing with. The orders are legally weak. But in trying to take away real education, they risk backlash from ordinary parents. www.salon.com/2025/02/03/m...

here’s a thing!

“The Trump administration has quietly dissolved the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, part of a flurry of executive orders aimed at rolling back the previous administration’s policies on art, culture and historical commemoration.”

New — US Department of Education Office for Civil Rights staff who were on the Equity committee were all placed on paid administrative leave last night because of the DEIA executive order. They received this email, a source in the dept. tells me:

Well this is an awkward list to be on

The true purpose of the "DEI" culture war issue on display — it's not about hiring practices/jobs, it's a systematic erasure of civil rights history and progress, and the rights themselves are in danger. Expect to see this affect schools (more than already, anyway). www.nbcnews.com/politics/don...

I wrote about this erasure when Biden invited historians to the white house to talk about rising fascism ... and at least in the public narrative, missed the blueprint we've made here: www.npr.org/2022/09/04/1...

“The January 6th rioters’ grievances, which are tethered to an alternate reality of deep-state operatives and political persecution, are the same that have shaped Patel’s through-the-looking-glass version of events of the past ten years. That’s the perspective he wants to bring to the F.B.I.”

Kash Patel, who co-produced the track "Justice for All" featuring the "J6 Prison Choir" claimed he has no idea who actually sang on the track

New from me in the @newyorker.com: How Kash Patel hitched his deep state fantasies to the political persecution narrative that was used to rehabilitate January 6ers www.newyorker.com/news/the-led...

In the sense that the right has turned another culture war issue into job cuts and mismanagement across government, yes DEI plays a role in this type of thing.
