I wrote a little bit about the Library of Congress - a place I care about deeply - given today's news: bcgl.substack.com/p/the-disman...

NEW: ALA denounces yesterday's unlawful firing of Dr. Shira Perlmutter, the Register of Copyrights at the Library of Congress. Dr. Perlmutter has led the US Copyright Office with integrity, intelligence and an understanding of intellectual property issues. 1/2

three cheers that the beta version of the new ESTC (english short title catalogue) is now online: datb.cerl.org/estc/ thank you to everyone who has been working so hard to make this data accessible again—& to @print-and-prob.bsky.social for the indispensable stop-gap.

TIL MARC records—the metadata backbone of libraries— were created in the 1960s by Henriette Avram, a computer programmer who worked at the NSA before joining the Library of Congress. Carla Hayden called this her favorite image in _The Card Catalog_ 😢: www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture...

Heading home after a restorative day in Norwich, with a brilliant @writerscentre.bsky.social event this evening on nuns in fiction 🧡

Dr Carla Hayden was a truly great Librarian of Congress. It is an outrage that she has been sacked - a national shame on the United States. I had the pleasure of knowing her and working with her - she’ll continue to do good in the next phase of her career whatever that is.

Waking to this utterly appalling news. Sharing from the only international report I can see so far, given Dr Hayden was summarily dismissed at 6:56pm EST: www.thestar.com/news/world/u... Be in no doubt, this is fascism in action. Pray for the USA, for Dr Hayden, and for American libraries.

Librarian of Congress’ office, November 2024. Am struck by how blatantly the US administration is striking out at the best in their nation. apnews.com/article/dona...

Dr. Hayden is a consummate professional, career librarian, and public servant. I cannot think of anyone in the Trump administration who is fit to address the Librarian of Congress in this way:

"The library has been open the entire time. The library has been the community’s anchor. It’s the heart of the community at good times and bad times." Dr. Hayden has always been the best of us. americanlibrariesmagazine.org/blogs/the-sc... #MyLibrarianForever

BREAKING: President Trump just fired our nation's Librarian. My statement here:

Donald Trump just fired my dear friend Dr. Carla Hayden—the Librarian of Congress—via email. This is disgraceful. The Library of Congress represents some of the best America has to offer. Equal access to learning for all.

At the start of this year, three of the institutions most important to American cultural preservation—the National Archives, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History—were run by women for the first time. As of today, Trump has fired two of those three.

Tomorrow (9 May) ahead of her Julian Lecture on Sat, Hetta Howes will appear with Catherine Coldstream in conversation with Sally-Anne Lomas at the Dragon Hall. Tickets selling fast but still available at time of posting: nationalcentreforwriting.org.uk/events/break... @writerscentre.bsky.social

A lovely Thought for the Day on Radio 4 this morning with Jayne Manfredi quoting from Julian and her inspiration to "acknowledge that whether we are people of faith or not ... God has the last word and that last word is love": www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/... #JulianOfNorwich #RevelationsOfDivineLove

Mother Julian of Norwich, remembered today, lived through the 100 Years' War & wrote about suffering & reconciliation: “For Christ is the peace of all things . . . for he is the endless purpose of all things.” Peace is not just the absence of war, but the presence of divine order and love. #VE80

Julian of Norwich, whose day it is today, in glass by King & Son, 1950s at St Thomas, Norwich. All the previous glass in the church was destroyed by German bombing on 27th April 1942, but out of destruction came forth loveliness, and 'all manner of thing shall be well'.

Today (8 May) is Julian’s day. The sacrament will be exposed on the high altar at St Julian's, @dioceseofnorwich.bsky.social from 2pm until Evening Prayer at 6pm. The Julian cell will also be available for prayer. Solemn Mass will be sung at 7.30pm, followed by drinks at the Rectory. All welcome.

Today (8 May) is Julian’s day - the day she was said to have experienced her revelations of divine love in 1373. We know very few biographical facts about her - even the name by which we know her is derived from the church in which she had her anchor hold, St Julian’s on Rouen Road, Norwich.

Who knew a fish could express "What the fuck was that?" with such ease.

HUGE NEWS. The judge in the case where 21 state attorneys generals sued the Trump administration over dismantling the IMLS just issued an injunction in favor of the plaintiffs. This is good news & the judge further indicates that the plaintiffs have a STRONG case here. bookriot.com/the-latest-f...

Sharing with permission an awesome accordion book in an old accordion student Sam Nyweide is creating in my local history seminar. Other students are doing digitally-based projects. In a nod to those using StoryMaps she built a wooden slider on one fold! @ubuffalohistory.bsky.social #dhmakes

I am working at a cafe on the beach and listening to two students talking about referencing styles. They are taking it VERY seriously and worrying about full stops.

In a few years (max) when people start asking why we thought AI was a good idea I am creating a record that we did NOT think it was a good idea and the main reason people were ever convinced was billions of dollars of propaganda

Cats and books, what could be better? The CueCat barcode scanner has been around for twenty-five years, and has developed a cult following of its own. All good things must come to an end however, and LibraryThing has just snapped up the last of these feline scanners.

There’s a little secret copse nearby that’s just frothing with bluebells at the moment. I keep expecting to see flower fairies any moment, come to pick new hats.
