Skynet is here. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has once again called for a global ban on lethal autonomous weapon systems – machines capable of taking human lives without human oversight – describing them as “politically unacceptable” and “morally repugnant.” news.un.org/en/story/202...

“Ultra-conservative groups from the US and Europe are attending a “family values” conference in Kenya this week – one of several planned in Africa this year – in what activists are describing as a “direct attack” on LGBT and women’s rights.” www.france24.com/en/africa/20...

NEW: Records show that senior State Department officials in both D.C. and Gambia coordinated with Starlink execs to coax, lobby and browbeat Gambian government ministers to help Musk. One official said Gambia is under “maximum pressure” to yield.

NEW: The move — along with the CDC’s explanation — is a sign that the nation’s top public health agency may be falling in line under HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a longtime critic of vaccines. By @sheinvestigates.bsky.social

I know i know i know that they aren't really trying to save money or save lives but just hurt people they want to hurt i know i know but also: The ACL saved so much money by helping disabled people stay in their homes

At listening posts around the world, U.S. intelligence intercepted and translated signals from the Soviets to advance American interests. @annneumann.bsky.social tells the story of one such base in our most recent issue.

I'm thinking about empire; we all are. Here's a slice of my family's history, which traces American empire through the Horn of Africa.

My father would have turned 80 on Sunday. So the timing of this piece @thebafflermag is very apt. In the 1960s he served on a U.S. military "listening post" in the Horn of Africa. Here Dad is, riding his Matchless moto on the road to Asmara. thebaffler.com/salvos/liste...

"Listening Devices: Reunited with the Cold War Spies of Kagnew Station." I wrote about my father, my relationship to the Horn of Africa, and our country's intelligence efforts in the region for The Baffler No. 77, now in print.

Thanks @longreads.com for the inclusion, the good company, and your consistently fine work! Thanks @thebaffler.com for always giving me a home! longreads.com/2024/12/20/b...

Thank you, @ronhogan.bsky.social ! (Sorry for 9 months late)

"America has a long history of prison music, and its power goes beyond helping those inside: This music can transform us, changing how we think about the people who make it."

To learn more about the Fano, the recent war in Tigray and its aftermath, and the history and sources of conflict in Ethiopia under Abiy Ahmed, read my February piece @Harpers which sadly anticipates the violence this week in Amhara:

But they weren't staunch Abiy supporters. They wanted what they called Amhara independence, most of all. This week, Fano took over the Lalibela airport, halting flights in or out of the holy city in Amhara's north. 4/

When I was in Amhara during the war, I attended a Fano training in Lalibela. The trainees and leaders feared the return of Tigrayan forces to their area, which had been occupied a few months earlier 3/

Amhara forces and the Fano were an integral part of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's two year war on Tigray, which essentially ended last November although the aftermath is grim for millions. Since then, loyalties have changed quickly as Abiy works to centralize his power. 2/

The Ethiopian government has declared a state of emergency in the Amhara region due to fighting between fed forces and the Amhara militia group, Fano 1/ https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/ethiopia-declares-state-emergency-following-militia-clashes-2023-08-04/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=twitter
