Rice plants inherit cold tolerance in just three generations - without changes to their DNA. This study challenges an interpretation of evolution that has been around for more than a hundred years 🧪 www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Nothing beats a good South Indian brekky with the folks after a long walk! In their 70s, and they still keep the pace! ❤️

In 1987 I took Stephen Jay Gould’s “Science B16 course” that helped convince me to be major in Biology w/ a focus on Evolution. But it was my TA Wayne Madison showing us early versions of MacClade that really did the trick.

We're hiring an entomology collections manager @nhm.org ! I have nothing to do with the search, but happy to answer questions about the museum & LA! 🧪🦋🐝🐞🐜🦗🪰🪲🪳🕷️ workforcenow.adp.com/mascsr/defau...

Big congratulations to GSA President Brenda Andrews, winner of the 2025 Friesen Prize! 🎉 A leader in functional genomics at @uoft.bsky.social, she’s known for pioneering yeast genetics research and advancing biomedical science in Canada. Read the full article: buff.ly/LvEQLZU

Excited to announce our paper on ancient Borrelia genomes is finally out! 🦠💀We document the evolutionary history of louse-borne relapsing fever, published today in @science.org‬ with @lucyvandorp.bsky.social and @pontus-skoglund.bsky.social #aDNA 🏺🧪🧬 Main findings and paper below: 🧵⬇️

In the latest #GENETICS paper, Hannes Becher and Brian Charlesworth describe a new approach for modeling the effects of Hill-Robertson interference on adaptation and variability in non-recombining genomic regions. Read more: buff.ly/vg9uvFE

New preprint! Autocycler is a tool for long-read consensus assembly of bacterial genomes. It's like Trycycler but can be run fully automated (without any human intervention). www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... (1/6)

12 years apart! I wonder if I can get Fred to share his hooding ceremony photo - he tells me he had a rat-tail throughout grad school that he let Anne chop off upon graduating. Lol.

New manuscript out in @asm.org MRA! We develop a new R package called methylMapR to characterize the prokaryotic functional methylome from long read PacBio data. journals.asm.org/eprint/SNT8I... Check it out and do give the package a try! github.com/therealtotod...

More grad pics! ❤️ This time - with my two two awesome MS grads @trevormugoya.bsky.social and Surangi, and my PhD grad, Dr. Dunn! See y’all on stage later today!

Repeats in DNA can form structures other than the typical double helix. Using newer techniques, we can see the repeats and predict their non-helical structures better. There are a lot of super cool things that will come from this work, thanks to @linneasmeds.bsky.social and team! 🤩

These two! ❤️ Happy #Caturday from Calvin and Pepper!

"The vast majority of our data on mating systems comes from a small number of disproportionally sampled families. -families with significant proportions of dioecious or monoecious species are much more likely to be undersampled -the frequency of selfing in angiosperms is overestimated" #Botany 🌱

Wahoo! Congrats to all my fabulous colleagues who were just promoted/tenured! @jeetsukumaran.bsky.social received tenure and was promoted to Associate Professor; Lluvia Flores-Renteria and Nick Barber were both promoted to Full Professors! Well deserved!

Nice episode of the "ologies" podcast featuring @mhedin.bsky.social. Even if you're not into spiders, this is definitely worth a listen. www.alieward.com/ologies/aran...

Really cool work from @arun-das.bsky.social on recovering sequence from unmapped reads (even with T2T reference or HPRC pangenomes!). Can recover a decent amount of sequence per individual using these approaches. Check it out!

Aaah! She did it y’all! Say hello to the newly minted PhD in Evolutionary Biology from @sandiegostate.bsky.social and @ucriverside.bsky.social, Dr. Tamsen Dunn! So proud of her!

In #GENETICS, Zeng et al. present a general theory to analyze and interpret the genetics of heterosis. When applied to a large maize dataset of many inbred lines and their hybrid crosses, their findings indicate that dominance is the main contributor to heterosis. Read more: buff.ly/Oxt9IjW
