It looks to be a messy camping weekend. Below is what we can expect in the Plains and High Plains from James McCormick @60andhatched.bsky.social @flatwaterfreep.bsky.social writersonthestorm.substack.com/p/weather-fo...

I largely think NW kansas will quickly turn into a mess, but that initial hour or two…

It looks like another round of severe weather is starting up in the plains. James McCormick @60andhatched.bsky.social describes what is likely on the plains today. @flatwaterfreep.bsky.social writersonthestorm.substack.com/p/weather-fo...

It was a beautiful day to visit the Iris Garden! #MahoneyStatePark #Flowers

The roses are early.

We’ve got some exciting news to share. After much anticipation, Sofia’s Play Garden will be 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟔! We can’t wait to welcome you to this beautifully designed space where children and families can learn, play, and connect with nature in meaningful ways.

And just like that, it is time for the peonies.

It is warm out today! James McCormick @60andhatched.bsky.social details how the day may end. @flatwaterfreep.bsky.social writersonthestorm.substack.com/p/weather-fo...

I only planted pink and purple Iris.

May is going quickly.

It's been wonderful seeing so many PLANT LOVERS at this year's plant sale. 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗮𝘆 — 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲!

Check out the account by James McCormick @60andhatched.bsky.social of a tornado that hit Omaha 50 years ago! @flatwaterfreep.bsky.social writersonthestorm.substack.com/p/may-6th-19...

After the rain.

My first storm chase, 26 years ago. Just because they were low-topped supercells didn't mean they weren't extremely well structured. Numerous tornadoes developed across SC Nebraska the day before the infamous May 3rd outbreak in Oklahoma and Kansas.

Here is an overview from James McCormick on how the storms played out on Monday! writersonthestorm.substack.com/p/weather-st...

Until the end of February, Cole was one of my colleagues in NOAA’s Global Systems Lab, working in our fantastic social sciences branch. He chose to take the “Fork in the Road” deferred resignation. We sorely miss him at GSL and he is one of the people to whom we should all be saying thank you!

It was a beautiful day at the lake

I’m a scientist who studies how climate change impacts our lives and the places we love. Most of us are worried, but many feel stuck on what to do. If that's the way you feel, check out this list below! We can’t fix it alone, but I know we can together. 💚

Has anyone noticed that the Republican discourse about North Carolina’s storm recovery vanished after the election? Nothing. Not a peep from them. Probably because they don’t want you to know THEY LITERALLY DENIED FUNDING FOR NORTH CAROLINA THIS WEEK! Crazy how that works!

Jeff is on a roll this week!

Oh good, "HRRR tries to kill us" season is back:

I'm pretty blunt when I write to rural Nebraska/Iowa/Kansas chamber of commerces and churches. If Greenfield or Wayne or Pilger or Beaver Crossing or Winterset kills 40 people instead of <5, if Greensburg kills 100 instead of 10, your town comes back at maaaaaybe 30% of what it was.

Detriment is a nice way to put it. I don't see how rural offices can stay open 24/7, if at all.

HRRR? RRFS? Those models don’t exist without NOAA’s Global Systems Lab. The physics used in even more models? Not possible without us. Decision-support tools like DESI and IDSS Engine used throughout the NWS? Also us. What my lab does is *integral* to weather prediction and keeping people safe.

I wrote a little about the crash of N365TA in New York, which claimed the lives of two recent MIT athletes and four others. The cause of the accident is being investigated by the NTSB; I write about the craft encountering a very hostile icing air mass. writersonthestorm.substack.com/p/n635ta-avi...

A lovely day to visit Lauritzen Gardens! @lauritzengardens.bsky.social
