Fun project to be a small part of! Here’s the first installment — and I’m sure we all agree on the rankings, as always

Physically, how is Drew Allar different now than he was in January? “Ask him to flex next time you see him," Andy Kotelnicki said. "You’ll see. He almost caught me. Almost as good looking as I am.”

Marques Hagans on Trebor Pena: “He’s a really good addition and the leadership and experience that he has is invaluable. … Kyron (Hudson) has been the same way and Devonte (Ross). I think they’re starting to find their own way on the team.”

Jim Knowles and Andy Kotelnicki get along well. They’ve golfed together, too. “We went to a country club and Andy said he was gonna sponsor me,” Knowles said. “Then he also said he was gonna tell the board to not let me in so.”

Jim Knowles, Andy Kotelnicki and PSU’s staff recently went through an honest evaluation of PSU, Ohio State from last year, Kotelnicki said.

“Max (Granville) is out with a long-term injury,” Franklin said. Significant loss for a promising DE who teammates, coaches raved about all spring. Granville got hurt back home during the semester break. “My heart breaks for the kid and the family.”

Here for a summer update from James Franklin. Assistant coach updates will follow. Franklin continues pounding the table for the need for a CFB commissioner

Three thoughts on Penn State football after the Blue-White game, starting with... The newest WR addition, Trebor Pena youtu.be/RIohRGcXDoM

Asked James Franklin about QBs Jaxon Smolik and Ethan Grunkemeyer: "That’ll be a battle. That'll be a true battle right up to the wire." Added they'll need to get both meaningful reps this fall and that Smolik bounced back well from last year's injury.

James Franklin with an open call to any LBs interested in playing at Penn State: "I think we got enough in the room, but to get through an entire season if we get some injuries it could be challenging."

Spring practice No. 15 from the makeshift media accommodations

Loved this anecdote from a story I wrote last fall as the college football world was introduced to Tyler Warren

Tyler Warren to the Colts at No. 14 overall. One of the most impressive athletes to come out of Penn State all-time. Makes so much sense in Indianapolis. Nice to see the scene from the watch party at Warren’s HS in VA, too.

Abdul Carter is/was about as big of an Eagles fan as you’ll find. As his dad told me last winter: “We’re all Philly — everything.” Don’t think you’ll see Abdul with these in New York anytime soon

Heard from WRs Devonte Ross and Kyron Hudson tonight. Ross, who also has been returning punts this spring: “I want to come out here and prove myself to Drew (Allar) and my teammates that I can make plays on this team.”

James Franklin said Nolan Rucci was able to get some individual work in at practice today. RB Cam Wallace was also back on the field. “I think he’s in a good place,” Franklin said. Should be in a good position by summer camp, Franklin added.

I have some extra time on my hands as I figure out what's next with my career, but there's always time to chat about spring ball New episode of The Nittany Dispatch is in your feeds (We'll be back again Saturday after the Blue-White game) www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZEn...

Stopped by practice on transfer portal eve Asked Jim Knowles about learning with & from Andy Kotelnicki: “Andy & I have a really good relationship. It’s good you bring that up because we do work together a lot in exchanging of ideas. … We do talk a lot, probably more than anywhere I’ve ever been”

Terry Pegula received score updates during the NFL owners meetings. Tears flowed in living rooms as former Icers watched this hockey dream come true. This trip to the Frozen Four is for all of them. Thanks to Centre Daily Times for giving this story a home: www.centredaily.com/sports/colle...

So… After nearly 7 years at The Athletic, my time with the company has come to an end. They no longer want to cover Penn State with a full-time beat writer. Proud of the work I did and the stories I told. Thank you to so many who subscribed. Time to figure out what’s next!

Asked Terry Smith about working with Jim Knowles “To be able to go and get the No. 1 coordinator in all the land tells us who our administration is, it tells us who our head coach is and we’re super excited” Lots of Penn State spring football notes, observations www.nytimes.com/athletic/624...

Abdul Carter makes his case to be the No. 1 overall pick. He says he will be in Green Bay draft night.

Penn State’s pro day will get started within the hour. Abdul Carter and Tyler Warren, both of PSU’s projected first-round picks, are not expected to work out

We got an extended look at Penn State’s first of 15 spring practices Thoughts and observations: Jim Knowles, transfer WRs make their debut, Drew Allar’s next steps www.nytimes.com/athletic/623...

Franklin on PSU's alignment in this new era "When you have a $700 million project going on at the same time you're trying to put a roster together with NIL, that can be challenging," Franklin said. "Challenging, but from my view it's been handled really well."

Penn State's Blue-White game will not be televised, James Franklin said. "Maybe shorter quarters, maybe no halftime. ... We'll still do it, but it'll probably be a little less plays. ... Probably won't all be live. ... A mix of live and thud."

Greetings from West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium (this will be the only time I call it that) James Franklin coming up at noon. Penn State will be practicing later today for the first of 15 spring workouts

Penn State starts spring practice today. We’ll hear from James Franklin this afternoon What do we want to learn about Franklin’s team in the month ahead? Here’s the full rundown www.nytimes.com/athletic/621...

Never before — and maybe never again — will there be a 5x NCAA DI wrestling champ. On Carter Starocci, the superstar on an all-time great Penn State roster “You could tell him he has to wrestle Hulk Hogan and Godzilla back-to-back, & he’d be like, ‘Yep, no problem” www.nytimes.com/athletic/622...

One of Cael Sanderson’s most prolific wrestlers, the same one who jogs out to the haunting main title from the “Halloween” franchise, didn’t want his college career to end any other way than in the spotlight. On the night Carter Starocci became a 5x NCAA champ www.nytimes.com/athletic/622...

Penn State wrestling heads into Saturday night with the team title secured and 169 points. Medal round (PSU went 11-1 with bonus points) really helped close in on the record. The scoring record (which Penn State set last year) is 172.5. Carter Starocci will be up first at 7pm.

Penn State stunned the wrestling world when it hired Cael Sanderson in 2009. What's transpired since has been a mind-bending run of success. One of my favorite stories (from a few years ago) Inside the origins of the Penn State wrestling dynasty www.nytimes.com/athletic/430...

And with the pin from Shayne Van Ness.... Penn State just clinched the NCAA wrestling team title. It's Penn State’s 12th NCAA title under Cael Sanderson and the program’s 13th overall. Four straight team titles for the Nittany Lions.

NCAA wrestling team race after Friday: -Penn State: 135.5 -Nebraska: 101.5 -Oklahoma State: 91 -Iowa: 73.5 -Minnesota: 47 -Cornell: 46 -Northern Iowa: 44.5 -Ohio State: 44 -Illinois: 40.5 Penn State with 10 All-America honorees. Three in the finals: Starocci, Mesenbrink, Barr

Penn State's Mitchell Mesenbrink, the No. 1 seed at 165, will compete for a national title Saturday night. He'll do so against Iowa's Mikey Caliendo (No. 3 seed).

Oklahoma State brass arrived at David Taylor’s home last spring curious if he was a fit for the job. He knows Penn State’s plan to build and maintain a wrestling dynasty better than most. In Year 1, he’s reinvigorated Cowboy wrestling www.nytimes.com/athletic/621...

Everyone is still trying to catch Cael Sanderson and Penn State wrestling. What happens to this dynasty and the sport in the world of revenue sharing? Deep dive on how wrestling powers and newcomers are bracing for change www.nytimes.com/athletic/621...

Carter Starocci ahead of NCAAs and his shot at that potential 5th NCAA title: "The focus isn't on Saturday. The focus is on right now. We got practice today."

Greetings from Rec Hall. Cael Sanderson ahead of NCAAs: "I don't think there's a more fun tournament in the world. ... I think our guys are ready to go, but they're the ones that get to decide for themselves."

Pat Kraft shared with the board that the fair-market value of Penn State’s field naming was between $1 and $3 million per year. This gift averages $3.3 million per year. More on Penn State’s field naming rights at Beaver Stadium & some pushback that came with it www.nytimes.com/athletic/618...

Pat Kraft on Katie Schumacher-Cawley and the women's volleyball program: "When you have someone like Katie who is not flinching one bit with what was put in front of her and her family, there should be a Netflix movie about that. ... What she did, I'll never forget it."

Pat Kraft on football coordinator salaries: "You go get the best. I'm going to go get the best coordinators we can. ... We can afford it. ... Why would I shortchange it? I think we have two of the best coordinators in the country. ... It was a no-brainer with Jim Knowles."

"If we have 16 (teams in the Playoff) what, are we gonna go into February?" Pat Kraft said with regards to the football calendar. "I'm not opposed to 14 or 16, I just want to know more about what does that whole calendar look like?"

AD Pat Kraft is meeting with the media this afternoon: "I'm here to win a national championship. We're here to win national championships. ... We're committed to it. ... When it comes to football, we're close."

WR Kaden Saunders and CB Kenny Woseley Jr. on the karaoke machine Saunders said he “feels good” after dealing with an injury sustained in camp that lingered all season. Can’t wait for spring ball. “Our room is gonna be solid. I don’t want people to worry about it. … It’s gonna be good.”
