Excited to share a new update to Mumemto, scaling MUM and conserved element finding to any size pangenome! Preprint out now w/ @benlangmead.bsky.social. Mumemto scales to the new HPRC v2 release and beyond, and can merge in future assemblies without any recomputation! 1/n

Join us in celebrating Brian Atkinson on his tenure promotion! His dedication to fossil plant research and mentoring the next generation of paleobotanists makes him an invaluable part of our team at @kunhm.bsky.social & @kubiology.bsky.social! Congrats, Brian! 🎉

Always love posts from @enirenberg.bsky.social--this is our hot off the press work with @gquirk96.bsky.social, but he does a better job explaining it than I would! TL;DR, as SARS-CoV2 Spike epitopes drifted, many became poorly immunogenic, irrespective of antigenic imprinting/prior immunity.

I am really excited about this new article series in Systematic Botany. It's a great opportunity to draw attention to plant biodiversity and natural history, plus rally communities around clades that need more work or have particular ecological / economic significance. www.aspt.net/news-blog/20...

This intolerable attack on Harvard’s independence and academic freedom is plainly government retaliation for Harvard’s speech standing up for itself and the rule of law. America must rally to the side of Harvard and its students in court, in Congress and in our communities.

NSF Physics was cut by 85%, basically wiping out most of its capacity for supporting research. NSF Astronomy was cut by 53% Undergrad education was cut by 71% and research on learning by 79% Graduate education was cut by 100% to ZERO. #GiftLink ⚛️🔭 www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

🚨 A new rule would let career scientists like NSF/NIH program officers be replaced by political appointees Already 14,000+ public comments, deadline is Friday 📣 Comments can be short. Courts consider them—and scientists with NSF/NIH experience are especially impactful Speak up! shorturl.at/WKuBj

🚨 Action alert: Two days left!! Help protect NSF/NIH from political interference. 👎 A new rule (Sched. F) would allow for replacing career program officers with political appointees. ➡️ Action: Object here by THIS FRIDAY. Comments can be brief and/or anonymous. Helps future litigation.

On a day when all research grants at Harvard were terminated, and in a context where Congress seems to broadly accept the notion that destroying science and health research in the US is fine, it’s worth noting that this is not what the public wants.

"Imagine the auto industry without 3D printing. NSF funded that. Artificial intelligence? NSF. MRI machines that help doctors diagnose you? NSF. Doppler radar technology that makes aviation safer by conquering wind shear? NSF. Duolingo‘s underlying programming? NSF. The internet itself? NSF."

Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3 www.science.org/content/arti...

“NSF’s closed-to-the-public deliberations were observed by Zachary Terrell from the DOGE team. Through his Zoom screen, he showed more interest in his water bottle & cuticles than the discussion. “The NSF can be understood not only as a catalyst of scientific promise for national purpose, but also as a guarded response to fears about centralized control over knowledge and thought, shaped by the dark shadows of the Third Reich and the emerging Red Scare.”

The PLANTS program (funded by NSF) at @botsocamerica.bsky.social was a cornerstone of the conference each year, bringing together new-to-science scholars with more experienced mentors. It helped provide community, support, and connection to new scientists. The grant was terminated last week.

NSF is undergoing a massive shake-up: over 80 senior staff cut, remote work banned, the equity-in-STEM division eliminated, and hundreds of research grants scrapped. This isn’t budget efficiency—it’s a direct attack on U.S. science, education, and equity. www.eenews.net/articles/nsf...
