I said on Saturday that *every* OECD country that has higher government spending than the UK achieves this by taxing the median worker more than the UK. Richard Murphy's response? I'm a "neoliberal", and every OECD country is "neoliberal".

Love this and the responses. 🥰

🇬🇮 The doomsayers on the right-wing of British media that cry betrayal at any slight agreement with Europe seem to have been roundly defeated on Gibraltar.

Excellent analysis of the disastrous appearance by the Equality & Human Rights Commission chair before Parliament’s Equalities Committee by @iandunt.bsky.social

Absolute car crash appearance before Parliament’s Equalities Committee by the EHRC chair. Reveals total ignorance about trans people & their lives. Staggering that she was ever given this vital job in the first place.

Rachel Reeves held her ground, rejected Treasury orthodoxy, and forced through a significant change to the fiscal rules on investment. She gets no credit for this, but she damn well deserves some inews.co.uk/opinion/rach...

At last, a Government that invests in Britain for the long term.

Welcome news 🙏

I have to admit I calibrated my expectations on Badenoch wrong. I thought she'd struggle but I didn't think she'd be so staggeringly inept at the absolute basics of the job.

What are people with views like this doing as EHRC commissioners? The secret’s in the name. Their job is to defend & advocate for all minority groups including trans people, not attack their rights. Time for Govt to replace Tory Government appointees with people committed to human rights for all.

Today @labourtogether.bsky.social called for a Digital ID for all UK citizens and residents. There are many good reasons for this - convenience, efficiency of public services, avoiding another Windrush scandal, but also the impact on perceptions of migration. www.labourtogether.uk/all-reports/...

Great to see @bphillipsonmp.bsky.social on @bsky.app. Hope this means the Labour Party, Government & other ministers will join so those of us who long ago left X can hear them.

Column, on the persistent spirit of Trussism in Badenoch's Tories and Farage's Reform ... www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

By criticising the UK Government for securing a better trade deal with the US, especially on steel, than any other country as “continuing failure & leaving businesses in limbo” just makes the Conservative Party sound ridiculous & increasingly irrelevant.

Great letter. Sums up the current nonsense, much of it in the Guardian. So, credit for printing it.

this is a really important and really positive move from Labour. Bravo. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Badenoch believes those who choose not to have children should not help supporting families through the tax system. We do so in multiple ways, because we grasp that it’s good for all of us, our economy & our country if other people have children & their lives are not scarred by poverty.

This (excellent) @anandmenon.bsky.social long read in the FT has made me feel optimistic, weirdly. www.ft.com/content/f725...

There should be resignations at the top of the EHRC because of the way they have wantonly and purposefully misinterpreted this ruling.

Outstanding from Lammy. Impossible to tolerate the moral oblivion into which Netanyahu has dragged Israel.

The U.K. fishing industry - weaponised & then betrayed & then abandoned, by Johnson, Farage & the rest of them - is better off under Starmer’s deal than it was under Johnson’s. That’s not an opinion. It’s counting. Anyone claiming otherwise is a liar.

The government has secured a better deal with the EU: 💪 Standing together on security and aid ✂️ Cutting red tape ⚡️ Unlocking energy cooperation ✈️ Boosting travel and youth experience 🗣️ Keeping talks going Here's what you need to know: labourmovementforeurope.uk/betterdeal

Most commentators don’t understand this. We’ve always fished in each others waters. That won’t change for a country close to the continent that shares stocks with neighbours. What’s changed, is we can now export more easily - vital - particularly for shell fish, which we hardly eat, but others love.

So it turns out there is literally no trade agreement that today’s Conservative Party actually supports

Reminder that the level of EU access to UK fishing waters, now being called an act of capitulation, will remain exactly the same as under the terms negotiated by Boris Johnson ukandeu.ac.uk/explainers/e...

brass neck latest: Thames Water says the government can’t stop it paying new bonuses to its execs - related to £3bn emergency loan - because they are “retention payments” rather than “performance bonuses” www.ft.com/content/b08e...

We treated the foreign press @fpalondon.bsky.social badly during Brexit. the UK ought to be falling over itself to help the European press understand what we are trying to achieve/achieving.. I thought Foreign Office believed in soft power nowadays

Excellent statement from Norfolk hospitals, though they are not defying Supreme Court ruling, simply the dodgy interpretation put on it by the discredited Equality & Human Rights Commission’s interim “guidance”.

If you share my concern about the interim guidance from the Equality & Human Rights Commission following the recent Supreme Court ruling & its impact on transgender & non-binary people please sign this petition. emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com?url=http%3A%...

For anyone who loves #Dartmoor or wild places generally, this is a wonderful book about its history & its mysterious & majestic tors.

Fastest growth in G7, wages rising faster than prices, NHS waits falling, trade deals which eluded the Tories with India, US & hopefully next week EU. No credible policy alternative from any opposition party. Labour MPs should stop fretting, keep calm & carry on. www.bbc.com/news/article...

Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride says the leaked recording of Chris Philp, of him admitting the UK can't return asylum seekers to Europe post-Brexit (despite promises made at the time), is just "blindingly obvious". Well, yeah. But it wasn't made blindingly obvious to those who voted Leave, was it?

As Weimar Germany showed, freedom & human rights can go backwards. The retreat from hard won protections for LGBT people in Europe, particularly the UK, should be a wake-up call. To misquote Niemöller: “First they came for the Queers…..”

Pleased that @translucent.org.uk are challenging the over-hurried & dodgy interpretation of the Supreme Court ruling. Good luck to them. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli...

The Conservatives believe nothing should be changed in their botched Brexit deal. A deal that led to 1.8 million fewer jobs. A deal that led to a drop of 27% in UK-EU trade. A deal that led to over 16,000 businesses giving up trading with the EU altogether. @stellacreasy.bsky.social

We are facing the starkest defence challenges in decades, and we must face it together with the European Union. That’s why it’s so disappointing to hear the Conservatives and Reform put ideology above security. @chelfulhamben.bsky.social:

Blimey! Credit to BBC World at One’s presenter Sarah Montague for keeping her cool with the rudest interviewee ever. Terrifyingly, he was apparently one of Trump’s senior advisors. There again, extreme rudeness in an interviewee usually means they’re on a sticky wicket.

Kemi’s sour grapes response to ‘two-deals Keir’ is a recipe for Tory chaos. Me for Independent Premium www.independent.co.uk/voices/kemi-...

www.politico.eu/article/what... Just caught up with details of the UK/US trade deal. Looks like Keir, Johnny Reynolds, Peter Mandelson & their team played an absolute blinder. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

The right’s attack on the India trade deal is opportunistic, envious fakery. Me for Independent Premium www.independent.co.uk/voices/india...

'I want Brexit, I hate Europe'. 'I don't want an Indian trade deal, I hate the world'. Next: 'I hate the EU reset'; 'I hate the US trade deal'. And so on and on and on until we are all covered in cobwebs.

When @financialtimes.com @theguardian.com @channel4news.bsky.social various other mainstream UK media & individual BBC journalists are on here, can anyone explain why the BBC as a whole & the Government are not?
