One of the most hideous sea monsters is the Scottish nuckelavee, a fairy that resembles a skinless horse fused with a skinless rider. Ironically, the nuckelavee hates fresh water. A river or lake is the safest place from this aquatic creature when it comes on land. 🎨Scott Purdy #FolkyFriday

Krai Thong is a folk tale of Phichit Province relating a story of the king of the crocodiles, Chalawan and his complicated love affairs that finally led him to a tragic end Deep down under the river, there was a cave where all crocodiles lived. #FolkyFriday 🧵

European folklore claimed that "cynocephaly" (dog-headed people) inhabited far-off lands. They were frequently depicted as aggressive and violent, barking and howling. However, a few cynocephaly became Christian. Most famously, St. Christopher was sometimes depicted as a cynocephalus. #FolkyFriday

Increasingly feeling like AI art is a right-wing dogwhistle, but maybe I'm mistaking laziness for intent. In any case, at this point if I see someone posting AI art I'm gonna assume they're either fascists or don't care that it is primarily used by fascists. So consider that one moving forward.

Ægir, the jötunn lord of the sea in Norse mythology, seeks to make his undersea kingdom as grand as any other king's. He sends his wife and nine daughters to sink ships so that Ægir can add the ships' treasures to his trove and make the drowned sailors vassals in his kingdom. #FolkloreThursday

someone already made this joke but whatever

Cadborosaurus is a sea serpent with a horse-like head that has been reported in many parts of Vancouver Island, BC - most famously Cadboro Bay, Victoria. People claim that various carcasses that have washed ashore are a cadborosaurus, but most turn out to be whales or sharks. #FolkloreThursday

Today's #FolkloreThursday theme is folklore of the seas and oceans! Our hosts will share your posts to the hashtag at the following times (BST): 9am-1pm 2.30-4.30pm 6.30-7.30pm (Image: Olaus Magnus' Historia de Gentibus Septentrionalibus)

Card 149: Wolverine vs Sabretooth Why does the fur fly when these two meet? They're hairy guys, sure, but not, like, Beast or Nightcrawler. Anyway, Jarvinen gives this a nice, clean, almost Wieringo-esque, look. #TradingCardADay #MU4 #FamousBattles #Wolverine #Sabretooth #Xmen

Counterpoint: Robert E. Lee was a treasonous loser who gladly slaughtered his fellow Americans in defense of slavery while being a mildly above average military tactician. He should’ve been hanged in Lexington.

According to Norse mythology, Víðarr the Silent is one of the strongest gods and has a strange weapon: an unusually thick boot. At Ragnarök, Víðarr will slay the monstrous wolf Fenris by sticking his thick boot in the wolf's mouth to break its jaw. 🎨Lorenz Frølich #LegendaryWednesday

The blue men of the Minch are blue humanoids from Scottish folklore who inhabit the Minch (the water between the Hebrides and mainland Scotland). They will shout two lines of poetry to a ship's captain. If he cannot complete the verse, the men will summon a storm to capsize his ship. #WyrdWednesday

This #BookologyThursday theme is inspired by Joseph Campbell and his writings on the “Threshold Guardians” that heroes face on their journey✨ 🧌Send us stories, art and lore about guardians, protectors, obstacles, and forces of opposition!💫

I enjoy how Americans will post an image of a man bravely standing in front of a tank at Tiananmen every year to commemorate the wickedness of violence against protestors and then see a protester get trampled by a cop on horseback on CNN in LA and say “well what did he do wrong to deserve that?”

Popeye sez he loves all his trans friemds

this feels like it's absolutely furrowed into the modern age of superhero flatness? we've removed all measure of minutea and intricacy to be replaced with "lore reference," like it's tied in to the disappearance of the civilian cast, it's helped to isolate heroes as this sort of Warrior Class?

I'm kind of obsessed with the Bizarro Jerry episode of Seinfeld cause as a kid it was the first time I saw superhero stuff referenced by other humans outside of a superhero adaptation, and I LOVE the care put into Bizarro Jerry (Kevin's) reverse apartment like this Unicycle where Jerry has a bike

In the Norwegian fairy tale "East of the Sun and West of the Moon," a young peasant woman reluctantly marries a white bear. However, when she discovers he is a handsome prince under a curse, she falls in love with him, and rescues the prince from a troll witch. 🎨Henry Justice Ford #FairyTaleTuesday

they never miss

In Norse myths, Skadi (a mountain giantess) married Njord (a sea god) because he had the nicest legs. But Skadi found she hated the beach since she couldn't ski and gulls squawked all day, and Njord hated the snowy mountains since they were cold and wolves howled all night. #MythologyMonday

People keep quoting this and saying "stop using AI!" But this is just a regular Google search. The issue is that Google now shows AI results first. Some people know to scroll past them or click the "Web" tab, but many do not.
