Vaginal speculum (c.1820) used to apply leeches to a woman’s cervix to remove excess blood, which doctors believed caused localized afflictions such as tumors or inflammation. This speculum used a scissor-like action to expand. It locked open, freeing the physician’s hands to apply the leeches.

In the aftermath of the 2011 riots then deputy prime minister Nick Clegg was emphatic about heavily punishing all the perpetrators even if they were children. When it was pointed out as a child he'd committed arson and got a slap on the wrist he got very angry.
