Vaginal speculum (c.1820) used to apply leeches to a woman’s cervix to remove excess blood, which doctors believed caused localized afflictions such as tumors or inflammation. This speculum used a scissor-like action to expand. It locked open, freeing the physician’s hands to apply the leeches.

While we're at it - if you're a cisgender woman please sign this in support of trans, non-binary & gender diverse folks. I am SICK of others telling me what I should feel & how I should react to others just wanting to be themselves... Live and let live, I say. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ www.change.org/p/not-in-our...

Today I’ve been keeping my book journal & list for 18 years. I have recorded 1078 books - so far. I have read a tremendous mix from YA to classics, non-fiction to poetry. Reading is such an important part of my life. Check out the full list on my pinned post on here.

I’m very fortunate to have a collection of original Victorian and Edwardian police detective memoirs. They are my pride and joy!

I’ve been spring cleaning my office shelves, which has been very therapeutic, and I’ve found a new home for my poison bottle collection.

In the aftermath of the 2011 riots then deputy prime minister Nick Clegg was emphatic about heavily punishing all the perpetrators even if they were children. When it was pointed out as a child he'd committed arson and got a slap on the wrist he got *very* angry.

This was just posted by @tbretc.bsky.social on another platform. The Chicago Sun-Times obviously gets ChatGPT to write a ‘summer reads’ feature almost entirely made up of real authors but completely fake books. What are we coming to?

This thread is hilarious! 😂

The absolute pathetic state of UK politics. A starkly obvious case for a simple blanket ban, but the politicians want to pettifog it, for no obvious reason at all... www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Imagine a world in which you could fix this problem, and others like it, safeguard abortion access, and give trans people equal rights. But that wouldn't be any fun for bigots, would it? So we can't have it.

Word is the govt has been shocked by the outrage caused by the Supreme Court ruling & the EHRC's 'update'. They expected us to roll over & die. But we have not. Nor have our friends, loved ones & allies. If you've not done so yet email your MP. How & what to say are here www.translegalproject.org

It’s ‘International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia & Transphobia’, or as I call it, ‘Being A Decent Human Being Day’. Observe it by questioning media, who call the right of LGBTQ ppl to exist ‘a debate’. Persecution, violence, rape & murder are not a debate, they’re crimes. #IDAHOBIT

It’s the 2025 “books I’ve read” thread. I made a mistake and had three non-fiction books on the go at once. This always slows me right down.

A couple of years ago, I started posting that women’s bodily autonomy in the UK was coming under attack whilst feminists were being distracted by transphobes’ bullshit. And here we are. Here we fucking are. The police issuing guidance on how to bypass the law to get hold of information.

Trans people warned you this would happen when 'gender-criticals' joined up their hate campaign with the far right, part 3 million...

First they came for the transes, and you said "Fuck the transes, they're weird"... Remember, until a few years ago it was almost unheard-of for a woman to be charged with procuring an abortion. Now they have "new national guidance" on how to hunt them down. www.theguardian.com/world/2022/j...

Amazing. Lineker attempts to make basic points anchored in reality, and the so-called “interviewer” just inserts his fantasy retorts into the text as if they were “facts”.

Two British academics discovered that a "copy" of Magna Carta, held in Harvard Law School’s library for 80 years, is one of seven originals dating from 1300. Read more: nyti.ms/4dmJMLJ
