I’m not saying Rasheer Fleming will be the best player in this draft, but Rasheer Fleming will be the best player in this draft. #thwnd

Love this. Joel has been on a great climb. Creighton for the Omaha World-Herald. Thunder for the Oklahoman. Now the Bulls with us. Give a follow.

VJ and his family are the only things making this draft coverage tolerable.

Great story here by Brendan Quinn about an American original. I didn't know Art well when I was out on the roar, but, of course, I knew him. Because everybody does. www.nytimes.com/athletic/643...

A great read from our @jeffeisenberg.bsky.social — a brief history of how basketball analytics went from a message board to a major part of every NBA operation: sports.yahoo.com/nba/article/...

New for @theathletic.bsky.social and @nytimes.com Art Spander has seen everything. The Miracle on Ice. Kirk Gibson. The Catch. But nowadays? The view is changing and time is moving. On the life and love of a true original: www.nytimes.com/athletic/643...

Big news: I’m thrilled to share that I’m joining the best sports newsroom in the world, @theathletic.bsky.social, to cover the Los Angeles Lakers. It’s an incredible honor to work with so many journalists that I’ve long admired. Can’t wait to get started.

How profoundly sad. The kids deprived of reading Calvin and Hobbes are the kids who need them the most. My brother put it best: "We know we’re fucked when they come for your cartoon stuffed tigers." Let's go sit in the grass and crack open "The Days are Just Packed." pen.org/magic-tree-h...

Literally begging you to post about Just Some Stuff. We will see the news I absolutely promise. Twenty people will repost the same exact thing about the news. Only you can post about a turtle you saw

There have been only 15 knuckleballs thrown in the major leagues this year. Does the pitch's best hope rest off the shores of Lake Erie, where a Tigers prospect is throwing 88 mph knucklers? On the death and potential rebirth of the knuckleball: www.nytimes.com/athletic/643...

The Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to announce their plans to assist immigrant groups affected by recent militarized raids by ICE, officials tell The Athletic. 🔗: http://dlvr.it/TLRchY

Concurrently terrifying and erotic Goodnight

His Augusta win was going to be the starting point of the story that would determine Adam Scott's place among the greats in golf. Except that was in 2013. And Sunday, his wait went on for another elusive major win. http://dlvr.it/TLNq3d

Took a walk into the Oakmont parking lot with Adam Scott last night. Yes, the guy has had a lovely career. Yes, he's made loads of money. Yes, he looks like Adam Scott. But this wait of his? The long one? Since 2013? For that second major? It ain't easy. www.nytimes.com/athletic/642...

Current mood

Jhonattan Vegas is the lone Venezuelan on the PGA Tour. And that makes his story this weekend — navigating Oakmont and U.S. political tension — uniquely his. http://dlvr.it/TLMm8l

Amid a tumultuous weekend in America, Johnathan Vegas has been trying to navigate both the US Open and the realities of the outside. We spoke Saturday. “As an immigrant, as a guy from Venezuela, a country that’s being highlighted in all this, it’s tough to see.” www.nytimes.com/athletic/642...

Sam Burns and the round you are not supposed to have at Oakmont Country Club. www.nytimes.com/athletic/642...

Want to know what’s happening at Oakmont? I get that. But here’s a story about a tree. www.nytimes.com/athletic/642...

Oakmont received an inch of rain overnight. Fairways and greens will drain fine, but everything everywhere is sopping. How bad? The USGA is offering full refunds to ticket-holders today who don’t want to slosh around. The forecast: Wet

Patrick Smith from Getty with an entry for best sports photo of the year capturing Rory McIlroy's club throw today.

Will forever remember the time a US Open passersby saw this hat and leaned in to say, “Hey. You’re in Duquesne Dukes Country, brother.” A10 4ever

Scottie Scheffler is already one of the best golfers on the planet. Now, he's transformed into an elite putter. And it spells trouble for the rest of the sport. http://dlvr.it/TLJDRm

I like this @gabbyherzig.bsky.social piece. To add some detail, apparently the 1927 photo she references was discovered by Bob Ford (the head pro) and others, at East Lake, because Jones won there that year. Upon seeing it, they requested a copy to bring back to Pittsburgh.

You probably did not know that Oakmont’s famed church pews (possibly maybe probably) trace back to a course 20 miles outside Philadelphia and a pioneering woman in golf course architecture Required pre-US Open reading from @gabbyherzig.bsky.social: www.nytimes.com/athletic/641...

Let’s U.S. Open

1) this is a great history lesson 2) we need to go back to naming guys "Jug" via @brodymiller.bsky.social: www.nytimes.com/athletic/641...

I ran an experiment, simultaneously posting articles on Bluesky and X, and then testing to see how many people actually clicked and read them. The numbers on Bluesky are higher, both because the X algorithm downranks journalism, and because Bluesky attracts readers, not just shitposters.

Hamilton was assigned to tumble through the revelry of Oklahoma City and came out the other end with this. Great read.

Trump makes formal ask to Congress: kill funding for PBS, NPR and public broadcasters My story for NPR www.npr.org/2025/06/03/n...

Already enjoying the split realities of college basketball folks bandying about all the college names — Jay! Hurley! PITINO!! — while NBA people rattle off a bunch of people I’ve never heard of

good morning. i’ve watched this pass 28 times already.

My column on one of the toughest to ever do it:

A view from the top of Erin's Hills as Maja Stark won the U.S. Open. www.nytimes.com/athletic/639...

Good read. At a time when the collective bandwidth for storytelling is ever-shrinking, Pablo & Co. have found a medium + format that works. All the props.

The potential for a late, unexpected Crown witness led to a heated exchange at the Hockey Canada trial in London today. And varying details emerge in accounts of the accused — through interviews from an initial police investigation, with apparent gaps. www.nytimes.com/athletic/638...
