There is nothing better in this job than the moment an idea ignites. It's not even the big ideas that are the highest hit - the small connective things which turn a concept into a structure which are a pure demiurgic thrill. "I know how this bridge isn't going to collapse."

L.A. TACO has confirmed that ICE has detained two taqueros at Jason’s Tacos , a taco truck specializing in al pastor located on Whittier Boulevard and Bradshawe Street in East Los Angeles. @theglutster.bsky.social reporting for L.A. TACO

I'm proud I don't have Andrew Cuomo's record of corruption, scandal and disgrace. And the name is M-A-M-D-A-N-I.

we live in a militarized state

Greetings! A large immigration operation and subsequent protest in Paramount, CA has led to a large amount of gas and “less lethal” munitions. Situation ongoing. Will update as I can.

It's telling that the brutal tactics of ICE (mace, flash bangs) to kidnap people are the same tactics used by UCPD to arrest our students. The mayor of LA feigns horror while continuing to fund a militarized police force at truly ludicrous levels. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/06/u...

staging a show-and-tell about a fake genocide during a real genocide to the government that has done the most to seek justice for that real genocide is designed to break our brains. They know what they are doing. www.cnn.com/2025/05/21/w...

This is truly something else, wtaf.

No matter what this Administration tells the American people, the law is very clear: Members of Congress have a legal right to enter any DHS detention facility to conduct oversight without prior notice - something I’ve done twice this year without issue.

NEW ARTICLE: A literal decade ago, Lyle Fearnley & I began writing RESERVOIRS OF HISTORY. In this essay, we argue that the concept of reservoir articulates what we think of as a particular bio-logic of historical time (1/3) www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

so, lies?

Steve Kerr: "I believe in academic freedom. I think it's crucial for all of our institutions to be able to handle their own business the way they want to. And they should not be shaken down and told what to teach, what to say, by our government. That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard."

Final page proofs, for a paper whose title is maybe the best I have ever come up with in my entire career

NEW: Rümeysa Öztürk says she's had 4 painful asthma attacks in ICE custody, and not only is her asthma going untreated but a nurse tore off her hijab, saying, "You need to take that thing off your head." www.aclum.org/sites/defaul...

Two upcoming events in response to the UCLA students’ visa revocations: a letter delivery/walkout on Friday, April 11 at noon, on campus; and a Hands Off Our Students event on Saturday, April 12, at 3pm in downtown LA. Locations to come. Please plan to be there.

I love the Japanese American National Museum — they do important work, and I’m so proud of their refusal to flinch in the face of fascist diktat

Here's a vizualization of turnout in Wisconsin's court race, in which you can see the generally higher turnout in Democratic counties Top three counties: Dane at 78% of presidential (76% Harris two way in 2024) Bayfield at 77% of presidential (56% Harris) Ashland at 75% of presidential (52% Harris)

Important reading from the cutting-edge team @uclaheatlab.bsky.social

The first peer-reviewed article coming out of the @uclaheatlab.bsky.social, co-authored with four of the students in my lab. Incarcerated folks are at the frontline of climate change. Incarceration makes people more likely to experience heat-related illness and death (1/5)

Correction. “In defiance of” not “in face of”. @nytimes.com

They're defying court orders and carrying out mass deportations.

Columbia had one of the most vicious anti-student protestor responses of all the American universities. What would Schumer have liked to see? Another Kent State?

The headline really sanitizes what they did to this guy. Getting stripped naked, inadequate food, sleep deprivation sounds more like war on terror ear rendition than "interrogation."

Literal fucking insanity at Columbia right now

#Atlanta Important read.

Yeah, this is a perennial truth -- landmark struggles over free speech typically involve people who are saying and doing things that are *unpopular* That's, uh, why they need the protection of the First Amendment. It's sort of the whole point.

we're in legit first they came for territory and a lot of people have been failing at this test they cite all the time

PUSHBACK by @maryfissell.bsky.social is officially on sale tomorrow! bookshop.org/p/books/push...

A President who detains a protestor and revokes their legal status can only be called one thing: A dictator. Silencing dissent is unlawful, unjust, and authoritarian through and through.

An open question right now is whether international student workers at Columbia are expected to show up to conduct research in labs or teach undergraduates tomorrow. The university has provided no guidance. Why would anyone feel safe anywhere near campus?

Today’s winner of the internet

It’s almost as if skyrocketing homelessness isn’t caused by addiction or mental illness, but by millions of people being rent-gouged out of a place to live.
