not the main issue here but i'd really appreciate it if democratic politicians spoke out in support of big-city life and culture with the same energy and reverence that all politicians have for small towns los angeles is "real america" and so are all the other big cities the president hates

Fascists hate walkable cities Because they show that you can build diverse communities And that these communities will stand up for eachother

The fact that every protest has been largely peaceful except LA and there’s 50 angles of the cops starting the violence really drives home how manufactured the California crisis is But what happened in Minnesota is manufactured in another sense but way more real and terrifying

Nothing has prepared you to live under Trump 2 as much as growing up in 1980s/90s Latin America. It was exactly like that! The sudden announcements changing everything, the overwhelming uncertainty, the sheer vertigo and whiplash. Plus, the sense that democracy is fragile and could collapse...

I will say that it is funny that three positions that were the core of my youth: the current neoliberal trade regime is bad, the Iraq War is a monstrous mistake and George W Bush sucks, have now become right-wing canon.

Get in loser, we're tanking the economy

Every time I make any kind of pasta I think of this

This is my old city journalist brain firing but I believe that the USA way of isolating everybody into unwalkable suburbia, requiring private cars for existence, & removing true public space has had a disastrous effect on the US's sense of community & empathy and we must, but won't, deal with that
