Love that this is happening. Also hilariously proper that the UK version modifies “no kings” to “no tyrants.” No need to throw into question monarchy, per se.

Hope someone’s already working on some Neo-Noir set amidst the military occupation of DTLA.

Marines deployed to Los Angeles temporarily detained a civilian, the U.S. military confirmed

One of the ironies of the “Hillbilly Elegy” grift is that that book was in fact more derisively elitist about “Hillbillies” (of which Vance actually isn’t a member) than any of the treatment Vance says he got at Yale.

Federalism, who knew?

“His actions were illegal—both exceeding the scope of his statutory authority and violating the Tenth Amendment to the [US] Constitution. He must therefore return control of the California National Guard to the Governor of the State of California forthwith.” storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

11 a.m.? Good, you don’t want to do it too early when everyone is all groggy. Then you can grab some lunch and just coast into birthday weekend.

Senator Padilla was driven violently to his knees–as if made to kneel before the authority of the executive–because the administration called his questions “disrespectful”. This should offend not just the other 99 Senators. It should offend the conscience of this country.

Great let’s escalate it. I’m really tired of the Carville wing of the party and it’s time they were pressed to fight back.

This close to sitting in my car and recording a reel about the Weimar Republic.

“We will hold this administration accountable.” You bet.

Proud of my Senator and disgusted with these fascists in the executive branch.

It’s completely insane that US troops are illegally deployed to suppress domestic opposition and it’s not uniformly condemned by the press and political elite.

Great op ed by my friend Josh Braver

Do we know who the commanding officer is? Hopefully someone who paid attn to military professional ethics at Annapolis?

The thing about federal level, presidency controlled immigration enforcement is that its vast discretionary power at the same time generates and triggers nationwide counter-publics to resist.

ICE fled the scene after ramming a car in Boyle Heights! ABC-7 in L.A. reporting what police said. They're saying there was an incident involving "a federal agent." "They fled the scene." "Hollenbeck Division is even saying they're investigating this, possibly as an assault with a deadly weapon."

Bob Costas Condemns Mainstream Press for Doing ‘MAGA Media’: ‘There Really Isn’t Two Sides’

Amazing how hard it is to write: “Police shoot at journalists.”

This seems flatly indistinguishable from having them perform ordinary law-enforcement functions, which is (wait for it) illegal. Absent an invocation of the Insurrection Act, military cannot enforce domestic law against civilians.

It’s already obvious, but Trump is making quite clear that he’s using military force to stop “protests,” not violence or insurrection or property destruction. Also obvious, but that’s unconstitutional and dictatorial.

Glad to see scholars in the news. This should also be one of those common sense citizenship things.

Good morning, I am very angry Trump has illegally called the military into my city.

On Trump sending troops into LA, says @brianbeutler.bsky.social, Dems should have been "prepared for wide-spectrum confrontation with Trump, instead of brushing aside almost all hot-button issues as perilous distractions." www.offmessage.net/p/the-consul...

I've spent much of my career studying the legal institution known as "the posse comitatus" as well as "The Posse Comitatus Act." Here's a quick thread. Cites at the end. Posse comitatus is Latin for "power of the county," or temporarily deputized people obligated to assist law enforcers.

Every day the authoritarianism grows worse - Christopher Rufo calling for the Trump administration to "dispatch unmarked vans to follow key agitators and snatch them from the streets while the media are not looking" christopherrufo.com/p/trump-shou...

Under Trump v. U.S., the word “whoever” impliedly excludes the President (or the statute is unconstitutional as applied to the President). Great work, team.

LA produces all of your Made In The USA apparel and fabric. LA is the port for most of your goods and produce. LA makes and the USA takes, baby.

This is not a good sign.

BREAKING: An entire company of Marines is pinned down in the parking lot of the Silver Lake Trader Joe’s.

BREAKING: Marines unable to quell protests in Venice Beach because it’s just too far this time of day sorry dude.

BREAKING: Marines stuck in traffic on the 10.

every time this happens, press institutions and lawyers are (rightly!) horrified about how journalists are treated. every time, they (we) seek special protections for the press to shield it from the worst abuses. this strategy doesn’t work. 1/

Okay so the Third Amendment jokes are funny obviously but there's also a deeper point, I think: Trump is more alike the exact things the Founding generation were afraid of than anything the country has faced in the interim

From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Malibu!

can't remember whether I've ever shared my Predator essay here, but it feels like a good time to do so

Now that the Marines are here we can finally bring an end to… this gorgeous 75 degree day in Los Angeles.

Our Marines are trained to be the most lethal fighting force in the world. Deploying them to a major American city under present circumstances undermines the apolitical nature of our Armed Forces.

David Huerta, President of California's largest union, was assaulted and detained Friday by ICE. Now the @aflcio.org, the biggest confederation of unions in America made up of nearly 15 million active and retired workers, is calling on members to protest on his behalf.

I just have to say for those of you not in LA that in the days before the horrible raids started, there was no crisis or whatever they would let you believe. It wasn't like something was escalating out of control and somebody had to step in. THEY are creating the problems.

Just in from Governor Newsom.

The right in this country always fantasizes about being the victim of the violence they repeatedly inflict on marginalized groups and the left.

From NYC to LA, we are in solidarity with our immigrant brothers and sisters. People deserve to be safe in their homes, workplaces, schools and neighborhoods. We will not allow this administration—or anyone—to strip away the dignity and humanity that every person deserves.
