The first time I ever talked to Kelly she was standing at the edge of her yard looking straight up at the sky. It was so arresting and unusual a scene that I nearly veered off the road with my bike— why would someone stand and look at the sky all alone? (Link in the comments)

“Life is better when we leap together.” Kermit the Frog delivered a commencement speech at the University of Maryland on Thursday, the alma mater of his creator, Jim Henson. nyti.ms/4dwMuhQ

I’ve brought elder daughter to a pick-your-own peonies field. Serious botanic dopamine…🌿

Fun fact: Kant lived by a strict daily timetable. He was so punctual on his afternoon walks that neighbours even used him to set their clocks. So when you feel like your life is lacking spontaneity, just remember, at least you're not being used to tell the time

ICE warning. This is not a weather post.

Guided by Camille Van Deurs and Rune Bosserup, we explored Nordhavn, a model of the 5-minute city 😉: mixed-use buildings, community-focused, child-friendly rooftops, walkability, bike paths, and water all around. Camille’s new book with Jan Gehl is out, and Rune gifted me Lessons from Copenhagen 🙏🏻

A growing number of scientists believe crushed basalt, a volcanic rock used in roads, could be used as a fertiliser, with trials showing it can improve soil and capture carbon.

Happy birthday #Satie, born 17 May 1866. Here he is aged 2 in #Brighton (I’m currently visiting)

Happy Saturday!

We are in a nature and climate emergency, someone should really tell the government …

I could watch this for hours…

When humans look at something we find beautiful it causes dopamine release in our brains & looking at plants shifts our brain activity away from fight or flight & into rest & digest mode. A field of phacelia, Norfolk:

Another day exploring around the Wordsworth Way. At Alcock Tarn where 225 years ago he would reflect on dominance of ind revolution over nature, just as we now reflect technical and AI domination over nature, and surrendering permission to feel? Substack post soon #NatureWriting #Solastalgia

"Men emit 26% more planet-heating pollution than women from transport and food, according to a preprint study of 15,000 people in France. The gap shrinks to 18% after controlling for socioeconomic factors such as income and education."

17th century Flemish artist Jan van Kessel was famous for his precise but pleasingly-arranged studies of bugs etc, usually painted on copper. Here’s his ‘Butterflies, moths and other insects with a sprig of periwinkle’, which for some reason makes me feel cheery (1661)

In Denmark, The Aarhus School of Architecture has invited me to talk about the 15-minute city. My lecture will follow a dialogue on future urban development with my friend and master Jan Gehl, moderated by Professor Tom Nielsen. ven., 16 mai 2025, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm aarch.dk/events/244998/

Alex Paxton's new album 'Delicious' sounds exactly like the artwork: exuberant, joyous, multicoloured cornucopia of stuff. Love it alexpaxton.bandcamp.com/album/delici...

Today's Word: Smaragdine Of or relating to emeralds; having a deep green color. From Latin smaragdus (emerald), this rare and luminous word could have given lapis lazuli a run for its money in the fantasy novels of my youth, if only it were a little more alliterative.

...One of the curiosities of American political life is that Republicans refuse to acknowledge the complexities and interconnections as ideology, but are very good at working with them practically, while the opposite is true of the Democrats....

Love this from Rebecca Solnit in The Guardian today on how deep social change is non-linear, and takes faith and creative persistence and eyes to see.

Amazing. Ann Telnaes just won a Pulitzer Prize for her work at The Washington Post --- which she resigned from after they refused to run this cartoon.

I addition to all the BIG threats to democracy, I am resentful that this administration has robbed me of my playfulness pursuits. I stopped piano lessons, playing guitar, rehearsing w my improv company simply because there’s so much work to be done all the time. Anyone else feeling this?

Big news in North Carolina: A federal judge (appointed by Trump) has handed a major loss to Republican Jefferson Griffin, who's trying to overturn November's supreme court race. The judge, Richard Myers, ordered North Carolina's Board of Elections to certify Democratic Justice Allison Riggs's win.

NEW: The autism research registry hasn't actually been walked back. It is still happening -- HHS is just calling it a “real-world data platform.” www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Israel's "defense" force has carpet bombed and starved Gaza, and is now going to capture and occupy it. How is the international community okay with this? How is it not bringing down at least the same level of economic and military sanctions as Russia? Is it atrocity-fatigue? Or willful blindness?

A gift to the NRA.

Went on the Amazon app just to snoop, and noticed more than ever before the **only one left** under suggested items. Our backlog is dwindling. People are about to find out just how much of their stuff is from China and they are not gonna like it.

The first humans appeared in my corner of the world about 100,000 years ago. The famous cave #paintings of #Lascaux are estimated to be 18,000 to 17,000 years old. Humbling, isn’t it.
