With all due respect to Sam, the lesson is that standing armies, debt financing, and cultural militarism enable a lot of stupid military adventurism. There’s not a lot of evidence that them being professional vs conscript makes much diff, unless the conscripts aren’t allowed to fight abroad.

I get this but we have a recent 20-year experience of grinding young men and women into the dirt in the absence of a draft with nary a concern from society. ~200K deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2007 alone.
