“Legal experts said they could think of few other instances in which an administration had demanded that a school have its president removed in order to resolve a Justice Department investigation.”

Crucial from @ryanenos.bsky.social & Levistky in the Crimson, making the call for Harvard to reject authoritarian extortion. It's a collective action problem. Institutions (firms, congregations, unions, universities, etc) can resist together or flip one by one. www.thecrimson.com/article/2025...

A big problem with the “viewpoint diversity” crowd: they show poor understanding of historical/political context re: the quote below. Putin long sought to undermine the academic freedom of university social sciences in Russia, Ukraine. Trump’s use of antisemitism, etc., imitates Putin’s propaganda.

This is an accurate headline. SB37 is an undemocratic attack on faculty’s voice in university policy-making & operations, including in academics, where faculty have distinctive expertise & experience. Gov’t overreach, overregulation & micromanagement. We continue our fight for shared governance.✊🏽✊✊🏾

to be absolutely clear, the trump administration is waging a hostile campaign *against higher ed* - not just harvard & columbia et al - & it is not engaging in a good faith negotiation. the goal, as with orban & erdogan & putin & many others, is to dominate, control, effectively destroy.

The 2025 Summer Institute presents a crucial opportunity for AAUP & AFT members to learn how to fight back against attacks on higher ed while continuing to advance our shared vision for the future. Attendance is FREE for AAUP & AFT members! Join us! Register Here! ⬇️ www.aaup.org/event/2025-a...

Florida’s GOP Presidential Hiring Spree Last week the Florida Board of Governors approved three new presidential hires with ties to Governor Ron DeSantis and the GOP, a trend that is clearly growing across the state. #HigherEd #EDUSky #AcademicSky bit.ly/4lcGeOK

This op-ed is extraordinarily authoritarian. Uses outright lies to justify illegal attack on Harvard and cruelty toward international students. A whiff of fascism. How could WaPo run this? thttps://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2025/06/23/kristi-noem-harvard-foreign-students-dhs-restriction/

Wealthy + politically connected conservative/libertarian groups have partnered with extremists for years to normalize bigotry and falsehoods as “new” and legitimate intellectual viewpoints—thru invited speakers, centers for “conservative thought,” “neutrality.” 1/2 www.nytimes.com/2025/06/21/u...

Why are no headlines focusing on the unconstitutional and dictatorial nature of this action?

@bradvivian.bsky.social pointed out in his book that viewpoint diversity is a euphemism for the supremacy of right wing ideas, exclusion of other ideas, and censorship of criticism. you can listen to us talking about it! www.liberalcurrents.com/halftheanswe...

It's hard to tell who are the bigger potential marks in this story, the editors at the Times who call what Trump is doing to Harvard (and higher ed writ large) a "dispute" or the people at Harvard who think they could ever make a "deal" with Trump. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/20/u...

“Viewpoint diversity”: Promoting white nationalists, banning ideas white nationalists don’t like “Viewpoint discrimination”: Holding white nationalists to basic standards of evidence and logic “Free speech”: If white nationalists speak, others are obligated to listen, treat it as worthy of respect

Universities are major employers - attacks on universities are attacks on jobs.

Why is @chronicle.com promoting this as an event on #freeexpression and #viewpointdiversity? Pinker misrepresents and dismisses the work of entire academic fields with which he disagrees ideologically + advocates a definition of viewpoint diversity that eliminates newer academic perspectives. 1/

ICYMI: Although Juneteenth is generally seen as the end of slavery in the U.S., the reality is actually more complicated. Learn more about the holiday here ⤵️

A former Columbia student says his reporting on the campus protests got him flagged by U.S. authorities, immediately detained when he got off a plane at LAX, and ultimately sent back to Australia after a search of his phone. Details in @status.news: www.status.news/p/trump-dhs-...

Plessy v. Ferguson for trans people

I wrote about how the 2020 protests hurt Trump politically. I also wrote about how counternarratives about left-wing violence are just spin — and wildly at odds with the reality of extremist violence. Gift link: wapo.st/3SOEv6e

So... for any of you bored enough to want running commentary of the International Communication Association Conference #ICA25 I'll be telling you about some interesting bits relevant to #propaganda. First up I'm at a panel on censorship, freedom and control chaired by @jesperstromback.bsky.social

The 'No Kings' day of defiance comes as many cities, including Los Angeles and New York City, stand up against Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) deluge of mass deportations under the Trump administration. Click the link for the full story and photo gallery.

Essential reading (by @jasonstanley.bsky.social) for every American. The media, aided by a handful of reactionary academics and compliant university administrations, has sold the public a huge lie about wokeness on college campuses, enabling the extreme right. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Good point here from Stanley: lack of GOP representation occurs in fields beyond humanities and social science. It's not about universities abandoning the GOP, but the GOP divorcing itself from science.

@emmalbriant.bsky.social discusses the current threat environment to academic researchers. "What we are talking about here are coordinated multi-vector attacks from often well funded political actors or governments." From the Cambridge Disinformation Summit. www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWep...

"Earlier this week Donald Trump called for a second civil war at a US military base. This scenario can be resisted and prevented, if we have the courage to listen, interpret, and act. And this Saturday we will have the occasion to act." snyder.substack.com/p/trumps-civ...

The story of Santa Ono, who foreswore DEI and walked away with nothing, has taken on an allegorical quality. His experience strikes at the heart of the most pressing questions confronting higher education today: What do we stand for? What are we willing to abandon? And how much will ever be enough?

"Rather than striking a blow for red-state America, these cuts would actually take a heavy toll on many of the communities in states that went for Mr. Trump in the last election — whose research universities serve as crucial anchors for industry and innovation." www.nytimes.com/2025/06/12/o...

Huge, if true.
