🚨 New episode! In this episode, we chat with graduate student extraordinaire, Sholei Croom, about their PNAS paper, "Seeing and Understanding Epistemic Actions". The paper explored whether learners can intuit what others are trying to learn simply from their actions. itsinnate.fireside.fm/28

🚨 Postdoc Opportunity!!! The Toronto Early Cognition Lab (@UofT) is hiring a postdoc to study early optimism in infants & young children. Work w/ multi-method approach, amazing undergrads & grads. Start: Fall 2025 or later. Details: [email protected] RTs appreciated 💫

The Open Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science (OECS) now features over 100 published articles! Editors-in-Chief @mcxfrank.bsky.social & @asifamajid.bsky.social share their vision for this open, online reference developed to guide the next generation of exploration in cognition & intelligence:

I’m hiring a lab manager! Full time, starting this summer. Perfect for a BA/BS grad or post-bac with child or family research experience interested in developmental psych or HDFS. Complete details and application link here: www.elenbaaslab.com/join #devpsyc #socialpsyc #familysci #psychjobs

Big congrats to @rthompkins.bsky.social on this paper! Happy to finally see this out in the world. Our work builds on findings from @juliamarshall.bsky.social on the impact of social relationships on moral expectations, with a focus on how children think about lying and liars.

Paper in @pnas.org in which @d-melnikoff.bsky.social and I provide evidence for model-based effects on automatic evaluation. This was a super fun “adversarial” collaboration with 0 adversariality. It may have been nice to be right, but getting it right is nearly as nice: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Check out our new TICS paper on disagreement and metacognition! We argue that disagreement drives metacognitive development by expanding children's consideration sets. With Antonia Langenhoff, Bill Thompson @wdt.bsky.social and Mahesh Srinivasan www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Online Now: Disagreement drives metacognitive development

Pleased to announce my new open access paper out in Developmental Psychology: The Development of the “First Thing That Comes to Mind” with @xphilosopher.bsky.social and @ebonawitz.bsky.social psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/2026-25569-001.html #CogSci #PsychSciSki #DevSci (1/10)

Though AI helps, does it dull us over time? A study from MIT found that regular ChatGPT use weakens memory, focus, and brain activity. 83% couldn't quote their own text. Essays became repetitive. Researchers call it "cognitive debt"—a slow erosion of independent thinking. arxiv.org/pdf/2506.08872

Wrapping up #ica25 with @rzhprfshr.bsky.social presenting our work with @joebayer.bsky.social reviewing the research under the broad umbrella of “social connection”. And perfect timing because the paper was published TODAY at @natrevpsychol.nature.com 🥳 rdcu.be/erayE

Assistant Professor/Lecturer Post in any area of psychology in the Department of Psychology, Maynooth University (Fixed Term, 2 years). Sunday, 22nd June 2025. universityvacancies.com/maynooth-uni...

Cockatoos have learned to operate drinking fountains in Australia. The behavior—never before seen in birds—may be a developing cultural tradition among one population: scim.ag/4kIi12G

Children exposed to COVID in utero had developmental delays at age 24 months: 🧠36% cognitive delays 🗣️64% communication delays 🏃57% had motor delays 🧪 Specific developmental delays were related to specific inflammation cytokines found in their cord blood at birth. buff.ly/AQSfBm9 #Medsky #Pedsky 🛟😷

My latest Aronov lab paper is now published @Nature! When a chickadee looks at a distant location, the same place cells activate as if it were actually there 👁️ The hippocampus encodes where the bird is looking, AND what it expects to see next -- enabling spatial reasoning from afar bit.ly/3HvWSum

An interesting discussion in writing group today has me wondering: What are people's norms for students doing *their own* study vs part of the lab's ongoing work? Their own = they come up with the idea themselves Curious about RA vs honours thesis vs grad students here too!

Out now in TiCS, something i've been thinking about a lot: "Physics vs. graphics as an organizing dichotomy in cognition" (by Balaban & me) relevant for many people, related to imagination, intuitive physics, mental simulation, aphantasia, and more authors.elsevier.com/a/1lBaC4sIRv...

This provocative op-ed misses some important points. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/01/o... (1) Many public universities (the primary engines of social mobility) already have out-of-state enrollment caps.

Just had the chance to present on an @infantstudies.bsky.social panel about inexpensive methods for data collection with children - if you're curious about how Children Helping Science works/the kinds of studies you can run, this slide deck is a good place to start! docs.google.com/presentation...

🥳🥳 New paper in @nathumbehav.nature.com: “When development constricts our moral circle." Contrary to popular belief, younger kids may start out with broader moral circles than older ones. Check it out here 👉 rdcu.be/eoaSe w/ @mattiwilks.bsky.social @karrineldner.bsky.social & Lucius Caviola

With everything that's going on, I haven't been sharing much about our research. But, today, I'm happy to share that @jennrichler.bsky.social wrote about our papers on "Double Standards in Judging Collective Action" for @natrevpsychol.nature.com! rdcu.be/enhkl

Sometimes people say its fair for those with advantage to get more (best office to the CEO...); other times, the opposite seems more fair (... charity to the needy). In this new work, Arthur and Xavier try to explain why. See the preprint link and explainer thread below: osf.io/preprints/ps...

🔥Exciting news in experimental philosophy🔥 Very happy to announce that there will be soon a new journal named “Experimental Philosophy”. It will be open access, free of charge for authors and follow all Open Science principles. Editors and Editorial Board below. More information coming soon...

I’m happy to be at #VSS2025 and share what our lab has been up to this year! I’m also honored to receive this year’s young investigator award and will give a short talk at the awards ceremony Monday

Please help: Do you know a baby, less than 12 months old, who can walk? We are trying to complete a project, 7 years in the works. And all we need are 3 infants who are less than a year old and can walk, to do a short online looking-time study. 🆘

This week in my Science Communication course, we’re discussing the process of publishing scientific papers and going through peer review. What advice do you have for Masters students thinking about this for the first time? 🧪🌎🦑

Our meta-meta-analysis is officially out! (w/ Molly Lewis, Sho Tsuji, @chbergma.bsky.social, @acristia.bsky.social, and @mcxfrank.bsky.social!) Estimating age-related change in infants’ linguistic and cognitive development using (meta-)meta-analysis onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Thanks to Francis Yuen for presenting his exciting work at my lab meeting! With Susan Birch and @jkileyhamlin.bsky.social, Francis has been finding (in preliminary data) that children may better represent the false beliefs of ingroup members.

In case you missed CDS last week, here is the preprint for Young-Eun Lee's presentation:, "Children learn what is right or wrong selectively from a legitimate authority’s punishment" osf.io/preprints/os...

Thread #2 @srcdorg.bsky.social #SRCD2025. Talk by @brandonmwoo.bsky.social: children think that people who are socially close better know one another's mental states, and that when people correctly guess mental states they are socially closer. tinyurl.com/wdr9ajmx
