This is what fascism looks like.

"In its annihilative force and ambition, the Israeli campaign is unique among modern conflicts. In fact, the term 'war crime' is not even adequate for what's happening in Gaza." A searing, essential piece by Suzy Hansen:

"Tenants in Kansas City are declaring victory after eight months on rent strike—the longest such action in the city’s history...an outcome that lends momentum to efforts to adapt labor union strategies for housing fights." inthesetimes.com/article/rent...

At yesterday's protests in Atlanta, police arrested the respected journalist Mario Guevara—clearly ID'd as press and, crucially, known for tirelessly documenting ICE abuses—for livestreaming their crackdown. He was booked on charges of "obstruction" and "pedestrian walking on or along" a roadway.

it was such an honor, so clarifying, and deeply moving to talk with @brian-goldstone.bsky.social on @unhappinesspod.bsky.social about his essential book, "There Is No Place for Us" www.buzzsprout.com/2131830/epis...

Hi everyone I was denied entry, detained, and deported from the USA over the last 48 hours because of my reporting on the Columbia student protests I arrived back in Melbourne hours ago and had my phone handed back to me upon landing

This is very long but absolutely essential listening, and riveting.

Deeply honored and grateful for the opportunity to write for How I'd Fix Atlanta. This was one of the hardest things I've had to write. Thank you @austinlouisray.bsky.social for supporting me in navigating how...big...everything has been and finding a path to this piece.

To listen to. And read Brian’s book.

“If not gestapo, why gestapo shaped?”

Amid the horrors of American life right now, this conversation—about housing, homelessness, and the pernicious myths surrounding both—was a true gift. Grateful to the brilliant @patblanchfield.bsky.social and @counterfactual.bsky.social for engaging my book with such depth, clarity, and care.

🚨NEW EPISODE🚨 We talked with @brian-goldstone.bsky.social, author of the phenomenal There is No Place for Us, about the forces pushing ever-more Americans into homelessness and how media and popular narratives about "mental health" mystify the core problem: housing www.buzzsprout.com/2131830/epis...

the line to get to the protest at the train station in atlanta

Important read—highly recommend! #booksky @brian-goldstone.bsky.social

Great interview with LA garment worker organizer Marissa Nuncio about labour and resisting ICE.

Per the NYTimes, a Disciples of Christ pastor confronted agents (presumably ICE) in front of her church as they detained a man. When the pastor shouted instructions in Spanish at the man as he was detained, an agent pointed a gun at her. Then, they laughed.

NEW: The new reality for migrants showing up to routine hearings: Masked ICE agents, hallway arrests, families separated. The 10th floor @ 26 Federal Plaza in NYC has grown so crowded, that 100s have slept on floor + bathrooms, one detainee told us. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/12/n...

Wrenching review by @libbycwatson.com of a book I absolutely must read that I know will tear me apart. www.thenation.com/article/soci...

i reviewed @brian-goldstone.bsky.social's stunning book There Is No Place For Us. the book will make you very sad and angry but it is a vital and inarguable rebuttal to the american fantasy that the only thing between you and a good life is hard work www.thenation.com/article/soci...

NEW: Despite a $1.3 billion investment that Portland said would improve the safety of homeless people, deaths in Multnomah County have quadrupled — from 113 in 2019 to more than 450 in 2023. With @streetroots.bsky.social‬

Brilliant review of one of the most devastating, important, incredibly reported books I've ever read:

It's hard to express what this review by @libbycwatson.com means to me — not just for its praise ("an incredible feat… the 21st-century equivalent of The Jungle") but for how precisely it captures the heart of my book: a system that cruelly exploits people's labor while denying them everything else.

Probably worth noting that so far this week it has been local police (LAPD and county sheriffs) that have been assaulting journalists, brutalizing protesters, and repressing dissent without any help from Trump or the military.

This book will infuriate you. It focuses attention on very important and underplayed aspects of our homelessness crisis. For example, I did not realize how much the extended-stay hotels function as a kind of payday loan for housing. Just horrific stuff.

Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice is a group of interfaith leaders and community members that support local workers. They have created a bond fund for detained immigrants and their families in Los Angeles. secure.qgiv.com/for/2025immi...

Thrilled to be in conversation with @alexis-madrigal.bsky.social this Thursday night at Green Apple Books (9th Ave) in San Francisco. Bay Area friends, hope to see you there!

So the National Guard is to protect the ICE officers from protestors and observers. Occupying communities.

My first book is out TODAY. I worked so hard on this thing and now I feel like this. I can’t wait for you to read it. Please pick up a copy wherever you buy books!

This authoritarian regime works overtime to arrogate to itself the right to determine the meanings of “violence,” “criminality,” “law-abiding.” The people out in the streets are organizing in communities are not fooled. They are experiencing state violence, criminality, and law-breaking firsthand.

Oh hell yes, they got a longtime private equity guy to review my book! He hated it! Do you want to be cool and preorder BAD COMPANY, or do you want to be like GARY??

Portland! I'll be at Powell's this Monday (6/9), in conversation with the brilliant @lydiakiesling.bsky.social. We'll be talking about homelessness, housing justice, and the structural forces fueling the crisis in Portland and beyond. The event is free and open to all. Details here:

wrote about HouseEurope! which is a very compelling legislative effort to keep carbon in the ground by forcing developers to reuse existing buildings www.thenation.com/article/soci...

There's so much that's deeply twisted about this story—starting with the fact that cities always find money to expand carceral "solutions" to homelessness, but never to provide the one thing unhoused people actually need: housing.
