Austerity is never a good idea

Amazing hodgepodge of economics there! When we went to Granary Square, we saw a huge international community displaying their work at Central Saint Martins, lots of multi-ethnic children playing in fountains together, street vendors offering a great range of food. Multicultural London at its best.

All part of the alt right playbook, as conceived over the years at Mont Pelerin meetings as outlined in the excellent Hayek’s Bastards book

NEW EPISODE OUT NOW! For the 1st ep in our new series about how bad ideas take hold, David talks to economist Mark Blyth about austerity, the cost-cutting idea that refuses to die. Why is it an article of faith that states need purging to stop them getting too greedy? Find us at...🎧 ppfideas.com

Fantastic episode. Mark Blyth is such a great listen, and Austerity is such a great book and a terrible idea!

If this is is anywhere near as good as ‘Austerity’, (the book), this should be an essential read

"Twenty first century American economics owes a lot more to Ricardo than to Smith. Ricardo uses these stylized, extremely dry, colorless models with almost no human beings. In other words, exactly the kind of thing that people like me do." Paul Krugman - 2025

Yes, more on defence when we have a massive crisis with young people’s mental health.

Our short history of Economics is incredibly short given the number of economists out there, however, we like to think of it a little taster menu. On that note, here are some of our favourite books linked to a mainstream history of economics including @duncanweldon.bsky.social's great book. #EconSky

“Hayek was right to begin his analysis with the question of freedom. The freedom to live as one wants is a big part of what makes us human. But under capitalism this freedom is, as Hayek acknowledged, only available to a small minority.” @graceblakeley.substack.com open.substack.com/pub/gracebla...
