This is a symptom of a broader unhealthy trend that, with apologies to Key & Peele, I call "But Is It Against the Law Though?" where it's assumed that the only appropriate standard for any kind of judgment has to be borrowed from criminal law.

If South Africa is a sovereign nation, how are we able to send our own planes we paid for to transport white Afrikaners to the U.S., but simultaneously unable to send a plane to return Abrego Garcia et al?

Feel like this story didn't enough attention -- US attorney Ed Martin was just at a fundraiser with Oath Keepers who were convicted of seditious conspiracy and did NOT receive pardons. They're currently appealing their convictions with Ed's office!

If the Supreme Court decides that the government can "erroneously" disappear you off the street to a foreign torture prison, and that federal courts have no power to do anything about it, that is, in a meaningful way, Pretty Much It www.supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/24...

The administration says that criminal immigrants can be deported to a foreign forced labor prison without a hearing that could determine if the person is actually a criminal or actually an immigrant and that if it makes a mistake it can’t be rectified because the person is now outside their control.

As of Friday, there have been 46 cases in which federal judges have blocked Trump policies. The rulings in those cases have come from 39 different judges appointed by 5 different presidents (of both parties) to 11 different district courts across 7 different circuits. Maybe it's not the judges?

I have an additional two sources who have shared the same.

Authorities in Turkey are detaining journalists from their homes as protests over Erdogan jailing his political opponent intensify. And Elon Musk his helping him censor people here by suspending their accounts. Where are the free speech absolutists?

Don’t let them frame the narrative. This isn’t about the character of the people being deported. It’s about following the rule of law and defending our democracy.

The way it works is that you strip fundamental rights from targets with less political support that people will turn their consciences off to justify persecuting and then eventually the state can do it to anyone, that’s always been the plan bsky.app/profile/pbum...

Something to bookmark: Potash is essential for modern agriculture. **Eighty percent** of the potash used on American farms comes from mines in *Saskatchewan*. {gift link}

As you watch the Trump regime wreck everything in sight, you should be regularly asking yourself this question: If the stated goal was to end democracy, ruin the economy, shred human rights, and aid our adversaries -- would the regime be doing anything differently?

I'm finally reading Character Limit. Living it once was really enough, but here we are. Send thoughts and prayers.

“You let one ant stand up to us, then they all might stand up. Those puny little ants outnumber us 100 to one, and if they ever figure that out, there goes our way of life. It’s not about food — it’s about keeping those ants in line.” youtu.be/VLbWnJGlyMU?...

This from @jvl.bsky.social is one of the most insightful columns about the relationship of the tech industry to politics that I've read in a long time. Very smart. It's paywalled, but you should really subscribe to Bulwark these days.

Curtis Yarvin wrote that “as the crappy govts we inherited … are smashed, they shld be replaced by a global spiderweb of…independent mini-countries, each governed by its own…corporation w/o regard to the residents’ opinions.” This reminds me of DOGE, “Network States,” & “Freedom Cities.” You? 1/

As Trump tries to serve Ukraine to Putin on a silver platter, we’re fighting for those suffering under Russian brutality. Sign the petition to urge the U.S. to help free Ukrainian POWs, civilians, and kidnapped children ✍️ #StandWithUkraine" www.freedom4captiveukrainians.org

Is this what you voted for, MAGA?

It’s becoming very clear that the Trump Admin never had any interest in serving as an honest broker to end the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The plan was always to join Russia and others in plundering the Ukrainian economy like a 17th century colonizer.

Hi All--Just sent out this piece (free for all) on the most important example of Trump and Putin aligning. Its about the issue of Ukrainians holding elections soon. Before the US elections, neither Trump nor Kellogg cared about the issue--but for Putin is was key. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

Pretty telling that the comparison here is “someone scolding you via a video you saw on Facebook that you found annoying” and “complete disregard for legal protections and long standing peaceful cooperation between nations”. It’s actually pretty accurate to how conservatives view the world

Reporter: You said an example of fraud that you have cited was $50 million of condoms was sent to Gaza but after a fact-check apparently it was Gaza in Mozambique meant to protect them against HIV.  Musk: First of all, some of the things I say will be incorrect

Just got a tip from a guy at the FAA. You'll never believe who is still getting new government contracts while all the contracts at the Department of Education and USAID and other agencies are being nuked from orbit.

Hey MAGA: Just because you don’t like what money was spent on doesn’t mean the spending is fraudulent. The government, Elon Musk, and DOGE haven’t shown evidence of fraud against USAID in court. Please pick up a dictionary.

He's *already* defying the courts.

Everyone should be pointing out what is happening at CFPB. There is zero argument to be made here that this is being done to provide taxpayer value. The agency's budget is minuscule, averaging like $600 million/year, yet it has obtained $20 billion in payments from corporations to Americans

If you are taking care of a parent, or struggling with the decision to put them in a home, remember you could have had a paid worker come to their house to help take care of them, but Kamala Harris laughed funny, so now their Medicare is about to get frozen.

Exactly. All of Trump's hires the same. The only qualification required is absolute fealty to Trump and to look good (and white) on the tv box.

Van Jones was on CNN telling people to google "dark enlightenment" and "NRx." When even he gets it, perhaps there's a chance it will break through. This is not chaos. It's not simply about $$ or regulations. This is a powerful tech cult with a plan to destroy democracy, freedom, and reality.

Trump's DOE secretary gave an unvetted DOGE liaison access to the department's IT systems despite objections from DOE's legal and IT offices. Also, a former SpaceX engineer is now DOE's CIO. https://cnn.it/4hQtFaq
